Course Description/ Syllabus Geometry 1A

Geometry 1A - Course Description:

Geometry 1A uses problem situations, physical models, and appropriate technology (calculators) to extend geometric thinking and engage student reasoning. Problem solving situations will provide all students an environment that promotes communication and fosters connections within mathematics. Students will use physical models to represent, explore, and develop abstract concepts. The use of appropriate technology will help students apply mathematics in an increasingly technological world. The concepts emphasized in the course include the mathematics of the properties, quadratic functions, adding & subtracting polynomials, measurement, and relationships of points, lines, angles, surfaces, and solids.

***Students will be provided with a calculator to use in the classroom (TI-84). They are responsible for taking care of and not losing the calculator that is assigned to them. ***

Syllabus (subject to change at anytime)

This is an overview of GRADING Procedure:

A concept will be introduced. The students will be assigned practice problems.(Formerly known as “homework”.) These practice problems will be reviewed the following class. Feedback will be provided, grades will be assigned randomly. Concepts will continue to be introduced and practiced. An assessment (formerly known as a “test”) will be given. This assessment will be broken down into the concepts we practiced. Each concept will receive separate feedback and a “level” will be assessed. A level of 4 through 0 will be assessed.

Level 4: ADVANCED This student has a complete understanding of the concept. This student can apply this concept to situations beyond what is expected.

Level 3: PROFICIENT This student has understanding of the concept with some minor errors.

Level 2: BASIC This student has a basic understanding of the concept with major errors. This student will be required to do remediation and reassess.

Level 1: BELOW BASIC This student does not have an understanding of this concept. Intense remediation is necessary before the required reassessment.

These concepts will recur on the next assessments giving the student a chance to reach a higher level. For example, assessment one will cover concepts A, B, and C. Assessment two will cover B, C, and D.
