Addition and Subtraction to 20
In the first unit of math, your child will review and practice strategies for adding and subtracting numbers to 20 to become fluent with these facts by the end of the year.
*We encourage you to practice math addition and subtraction facts to 20 throughout the year at home as well.*
Place Value
During this unit, your child will understand that we group numbers as ones, tens and hundreds. For many children, it is not until second grade that they develop a true understanding of how a group of ten objects can be called 1 unit (10 ones make 1 group of ten). Your child will then learn how bundles of ten will be grouped to make 100.
Addition and Subtraction
In this math unit your child will work on applying addition and subtraction strategies to larger numbers. We will practice adding and subtracting place value units (add ones to ones, tens to tens, etc.) This practice will involve different strategies that also help develop mental math skills necessary to help children understand the traditional method of lining up numbers and adding or subtracting.
Exploring Arrays
During this math unit, your child will work on skip counting and adding equal groups. This work prepares students for multiplication work that will be a focus next year. We will use tiles and other math tools to build arrays using up to 25 objects in all. Our work with equal groups will also help students learn odd and even numbers. Students will practice skip counting with 2s as they pair objects. If there is a leftover, students can see they have an odd number.
Geometry and Basic Fractions
Throughout this unit, students will be learning about shapes and their attributes ex.(sides and angles). In first grade, your child would have talked about the corners of some shapes. This year the word angle will be introduced. For 3 dimensional shapes, students will learn to identify and count the flat shapes that make up the 3-D shape. For example, they will see that a cube is made up of 6 flat squares. Those flat shapes in a 3-D shape are called face.
Data, Time and Money
In this math unit, second graders will practice telling time to the half hour, work on graphing data (information) in bar graphs, pictographs and line plots. We will learn the value of dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies. While working with money, we will also learn how to use $ and ¢ symbols appropriately.
