How to Letter: Below is a list of activities students can earn points by completing. After an activity is completed, it is up to the student to return a service slip to Mrs. Lundeen. Service slips can be found outside of Mrs. Lundeen's door on the bulletin board. To letter, students must earn a total of 40 service points during one school year.
Descriptions of Activities We Have Done In the Past:
Earth Week
Once again, we organized an Earth Week at school to help raise awareness for the environment. We set up a series of events to educate our school about the importance of Earth Week. We published daily bulletin announcements with questions about our environment. Then, we had lunch hour games for students to enter and win prizes. We held a "green day" by having all the students and staff wear green on Friday to top off the week. Finally, we organized the Food Waste Program. We collected all the food waste that students throw away at lunch time. Students put their food waste in specific buckets for their class and at the end of the week, the class with the least food waste won the Golden Plate, which will be displayed in the lunch room. Congrats to this year's seniors for winning the Gold Plate Award!
Recycling Program
On going throughout the school year
Club members have been donating their time during study halls and after school in an effort to help our schools recycle. Club members collect plastic and aluminum can recycling bins around school, in the cafeteria and in the hallways. In addition, they pick up all the paper recycling from the entire district. This is a program that takes some time, but is so beneficial to the environment! Club members have been suprised to see the bins being used on a daily basis. In addition, students around school are taking note of the importance of recycling, making comments that they have continued the efforts at home!
Christmas Caroling
Together with 2 other local groups, we went Christmas Caroling around Cashton. Our focus was on Senior Citizens, who were very grateful for our visit. In addition, carolers donated collected and donated canned goods to the local food pantry.
Cards for Seniors
Year Long
The club spent time creating Holiday cards to be donated for senior citizens in Cashton. All cards were colored and decorated and then donated to the local Meals on Wheels group. Cards were distributed to seniors the week of Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentin'es Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter and Memorial Day.
Volleyball Tournament
Another very successful tournament this year. We raised over $550, which we plan to donate back to the community. Thanks to all those who played in the tournament! Some of this money will be used to sponsor 2 local elementary students at Christmas who are in need of presents. What a worthy cause!
Haunted Corn Maze
Several members of the club joined together with FCCLA and took a field trip to the mall for a couple of hours and then to the Haunted Corn Maze in West Salem. A great group of kids came along on the trip- we had a very fun time- the maze was very cool- and pretty scary, too!!
Star Gazing
Thanks to the LaCrosse Area Astronomical Society, we had a fabulous evening of star gazing! LAAS brought out 6-8 telescopes for us to use and the weather couldn't have been nicer!! We spent a couple of hours under the stars, learning the constellations and looking at astronomical wonders. It was a great night to remember and we learned a lot, too!
Homecoming Window Design
Nice job to all those who helped spread school spirit for homecoming week- the window looks awesome! Go Eagles!!
Chileda Classic 5K Run/Walk
Congratulations to the club members who participated in our event!! We took a caravan of school vans to compete in the run/walk. Our race registration fees are greatly appreciate by Chileda. It was a hot morning, but we enjoyed the pancakes at the end!! Nice work everyone!! Super job!! Chileda serves youth ages 6-21 who struggle to find support in a traditional school environment. For more information on Chileda, go to www.chileda.org.
Science Show
A group of very motivated science students put on a science show for the 5th graders at our elementary this spring. Students were excited to watch our group of high school students create explosions, chemical reactions and a light show for them, along with explanations for their science experiment. It was a morning filled with laughter and science!
Movie and Pizza Night
Just a fun night to get together with club members and socialize. We watched "Up" and had some yummy food!
Pet Food Drive
Club members organized a drop site for pet food donations. We collected over 60 pounds of pet food that we donated to the Vernon County Animal Shelter! We advertised in the paper, at local businesses and throughout our school. Way to go, club! Special thanks to Matt Bjornstad for delivering all the goods!
Field Trips and Guest Speakers
Throughout the year, opportunities for field trips and guest speakers present themselves. We look forward to these changing activities as the opportunities arise. Trips in the past have included an over night stay to Chicago to visit science attractions such as the Shedd Aquarium and the Science Museum. Guest speakers have included the annual Nobel Laureate in Physics presented at UWL each fall.
