I am a doctoral student at Case Western Reserve University, pursuing an interdisciplinary PhD between the Departments of Psychological Sciences and Philosophy.   I have received extensive training in experimental psychology, philosophy, and neuroscience (fMRI = functional magnetic resonance imaging).  I use each of these disciplines to investigate the relationship between analytic-critical-empirical reasoning on the one hand, and empathic-experiential-regulatory processing on the other, broadly construed.  Might there be a tension between these different types of thinking?  Is it possible that they actively interfere with each other?  If so, how can we use this information to enhance our abilities in both of these cognitive and behavioral domains in order to live a more balanced and meaningful life?  This work has both theoretical and practical affordances, including potential paradigm shifts in the neuropsychological and behavioral sciences, and novel contributions to our understanding and treatment of sustainable behavior change.   My current graduate work seems to apply this stream of research to substance use disorder and recovery.
