Instrumental Music Program Goals for our Students
· To develop musical skills to enrich their lives.
· To acquire knowledge and understanding of music from various historical periods, styles, and cultures
as well as the function of music in contemporary society.
· To develop the ability to make rational choices in musical situations
and to be able to evaluate musical performances.
· To demonstrate the ability to respond with feeling to the expressive elements in music.
· To develop self expression.
· To find ways to use music functionally in life, either as an active participant or as an intellectually active listener.
Band Program
Fifth Grade Band takes place each Thursdays for 40 minutes. Sixth Grade Band takes place each Wednesday for 40 minutes. In addition to performance literature, there is an emphasis on developing music literacy and all basic musicianship skills.
Lessons
All of the students enrolled in band receive one 30 minute lesson each week. Lesson times rotate so as to minimize any interference with the other academic areas.
Chamber Music
As the students reach a more advanced level, they will begin to work on chamber music, such as trios and quartets, as a part of their lessons. Fifth and sixth grade group members, who have done exceptional work on these pieces, will be given the opportunity to perform at Chamber Music Night in late March.
Extra Ensembles
Additional Ensembles may be offered to students based on interest and skill level. Groups vary from year to year and take place outside of the regular school day.
