Unit 4: Chemical Reactions
Students will recognize the uses of chemical formulas to identify substances and to determine numbers of atoms in elements. They investigate evidence of chemical reactions as indicators of the formation of new substances with differing properties. Students recognize chemical formulas and balanced chemical equations represent what happens in a chemical reaction and how balanced equations relate to the Law of Conservation of Mass.
Unit 5: Force & Motion (Newton's Laws, Speed/Velocity/Acceleration)
Students will demonstrate how unbalanced forces cause a change in the speed and/or direction of an object's motion. They must differentiate between and calculate speed, velocity, and acceleration. Students will investigate and describe applications of Newton's Three Laws of Motion: First Law (Law of Inertia), Second Law (Law of Force & Acceleration), and Third Law (Law of Action-Reaction) in everyday uses such as seat belts, sports activities, amusement park rides, Earth's tectonic plates, & rocket launches.
