Biography:

I began swimming competitively at the age of 9 after moving from Iowa to Breckenridge, CO- it was either try out for the swim team or join the ski team....and I didn’t have a clue how to ski!  I did learn how to ski, and was on the swim and ski teams throughout 4th & 5th grades….only in Colorado! After moving back to Iowa at age 11, I joined the local YMCA team.  I made some great friends who I’m still in touch with now!  Swim team is the best way to make friends….in my opinion☺I was Iowa All-State for 4 years in high school and team co-captain my senior year.  I got a taste for coaching during my junior year when I was side-lined for the first half of the season with severe anemia and pneumonia.  To stay in touch with and stay close to my teammates, I came to daily practices- my coach wanted me to make good use of my time, so I was enlisted to help out the newer more novice swimmers….I was hooked!

After graduating from Marshalltown High School in Iowa, I went off to swim for the next 4 years for the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.  I set school records in 4 relay events, the 50 free and both backstroke events.  I made the Mid-East Conference team all 4 years and was voted as team co-captain my senior year.  I loved swimming in college and I truly believe that I was a successful student because of my commitment to the team.  I graduated in 4 years with a B.A. in Community Health Education. Immediately after graduating from UNI, Chad and I got married and we moved to Greeley 3 weeks later so that I could pursue my Masters degree in Sport Management from the University of Northern Colorado.   While I was in grad school I coached the Eaton Red Waves USA Swim Team.

We moved to Broomfield in 1997 & I began coaching for the Broomfield girls swim team as an assistant in 1998.  That quickly followed with the 1999 boys season.  I took over the head coaching position in 2000.  So the 23-24 season begins my 26th year of coaching with Broomfield- my 51st season! Also, from 1999-2013 I coached for the Broomfield Swim and Tennis Center Sharks- a team in the Boulder Valley Summer Swim League.  I was also the BVSSL President from 2013-2018.

I met my husband in high school. He was the team manager of the girls swim team my senior year- but we waited until the season was over to start dating:) Seriously though- people never believe me on that one!! Chad and I have 2 awesome kids: Lane was a successful swimmer for Colorado Mesa University for 5 years (got an extra Covid year). He's now working on his masters degree and living in Salt Lake City, UT.  Kaylee went to Broomfield High School & had 4 years of successful high school swimming. She is now a sophomore at the University of Arizona & is a member of the Alpha Phi sorority- she's living her best life! We’ve also got 3 dogs - Kodak is 18 months (husky, border collie, lab? mix that Kaylee brought home as an 8wk old); Theo is 12 (a rescue who thinks he’s a cat), 14 y/o Lulu (a chocolate lab).

I am the oldest of 3 kids- my brother Patrick lives in Broomfield & is the owner of and runs SkateStart; the youngest is Elizabeth, who was also a swimmer & she lives in Pennsylvania as a civil & chemical engineer.

Biography:

Kendall will be starting her 3rd year as my assistant coach.  She is from Erie, CO but she was a Broomfield Eagle!  She was All-State & All-Conference all 4 years at BHS.  She still holds many BHS All-Time Top times.  Her 200 medley & 200 free relays still hold the school records in fact!  AND: as just a sophomore, she anchored the 4A State Champion, State record-setting 200 medley relay in 2012- such a great race!!!  Kendall also swam for the BSTC Sharks for many years (still holds some records there) and the Rally Sport  club swim team.

After high school, Kendall went on to swim for the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks.  While in Grand Junction Kendall took on the assistant coaching job at Fruita-Monument for their girls and boys programs.  She graduated from CMU in May 2018, and immediately moved back down the hill.  She has helped to coach for the BSTC Sharks since 2012 & is now their head coach.  She worked for the Boulder Center for Orthopedics for 2 yearsLast year she got her massage therapist degree, with a specialty in sports massage.

Kendall is the oldest of 3 kids- brother Chris is a 2018 grad of Erie HS & youngest brother Colby is 2019 Erie grad.  Her proud parents- Debi & Jeff- will likely be found in the stands at some of our meets, supporting Kendall and the Eagles- along with her grandparents, Paul & Martha Derda.

I'm very excited to have Kendall back as my assistant coach- this is her 6th year!  I coached her at the BSTC and at BHS- we've come full circle!  Kendall has been a great asset to our program & I'm so pumped to have her back!
