Stain Removal Guide
We like to promote artistic creativity in our Art Studios but not on our students. As hard as we try to avoid them accidents do happen. So here are some cleaning tips you might want to keep in mind.
Permanent Markers: This one can be tough, but ammonia seems to work best.
Use it straight on the stain and then dab with a clean cloth until the stain has been removed, then wash.
Oxiclean may be used as well. Make a paste and apply to stain, let it soak, then wash.
Magic Marker: (Not water-based) Requires a solvent, such as turpentine.
Ink: Other than India Ink: Soak in a small amount of milk. Wash as usual.
Tempra, Poster, Watercolor, and Water based printing inks:Certain colors may be more stubborn then
others and may require extra soaking time. Soak in Oxiclean (or Similar product) for several hours until you can see that the stain is gone, then wash. Try to pretreat with a stain remover, such as Spray-N-Wash, then wash
Soak the spot in cold water. Hand scrub the stain with bar soap or Fels
Napththa. DO NOT use detergent. Wash as usual.
Glue and Paste: Soak in warm water, or boil if necessary. For non-washable fabrics, sponge with non-flammable cleaning fluid. Wash as usual.
Cray-Pas such as Oil Pastel: Put Murphy's Soap on the stain and dab with a clean cloth until the stain is removed, the wash. Dissolve with turpentine or mineral spirits or paint thinner. Also try the hand cleaner Goop. Wash as usual.
Chalk Pastels: Soak in Oxiclean, or similar product, for a few hours, then wash.
Clay: Allow clay to dry thoroughly. Brush with a small brush. Wash as usual.
Wash all stains in cold water. Do not heat dry until the stain in out.
The sooner the stain is washed out of the garment, the more likely that these methods will actually work.
