We have a high school and college graduation this May and I may miss the reunion. Carol and I will start a new adventure this coming year as we become “empty-nesters.” We are assuming the boys will not migrate home.

With one son in college and the other on an adventure in Malaysia, Jean and I are enjoying the quiet at home as we finish construction on a villa in St John, USVI that we are renting beginning 12/08 and hope to retire to someday. See www.VillaAnansi.com for pictures.

My daughter, Stephanie graduated form Brown in 2008. My son Matthew is currently a sophomore at Brown. I visit Brown and Providence frequently as I am a board member of the Sports Foundation and also serve on the board of my old high school. (Lincoln School). I often see fellow classmates Beth and Jamie Kiernan as well as Steve Dunn.

Our classmates may be interested to know that I was on the cover of Newsweek in December of 2008. The caption on the cover was hero or criminal (I prefer the former). The story can be found on the web as The Fed Who Blew the Whistle, or on Newsweek's site. The story is about my discovery of the administration's illegal warrantless wiretapping. My house was raided in August of 2007 by 18 FBI agents, some of whom had body armor and who took our computers cell phones, Address books, Christmas card lists and calendars and other items.
I appeared on the Rachel Maddow show and have been interviewed by ABC news.
In April I received the Ridenhour Prize for truth telling at the National Press Club. The Prize is named after the individual who revealed the existence of the My Lai tragedy. One of the New York Times reporters to whom I revealed the story is an alum, Jim Risen, and another of our classmates is mentioned in the Newsweek piece, Gene Karpinski, "74. Gene is the President of the League of Conservation Voters by the way. The Prize ceremony at the National Press Club was really special. I was introduced by Ambassador Joe Wilson, husband of Valerie Plame. His intro was very nice and I was warmly greeted by the 400 people in attendance. Wilson said his saga was the subject of a "major motion picture" staring Sean Penn. I think if I get a movie deal, I will be played by Danny Divito. I have also been interviewed by the Voice of America, although that does not appear to be on the internet. I entertained calls from people in Iran, who were very complimentary of my story. Pretty strange experience, but also fascinating. We still have not heard anything officially from the Department of Justice.
Nelson Bock
I've been living in Denver, CO since 1984. My partner, Bonita Bock, and I work as co-directors of Wartburg West, the Denver-based urban experiential education program of Wartburg College, Waverly IA. We shepherd several groups of Wartburg students each year--Fall, Winter, and Summer--through this program which combines academic internships along with courses in religion, politics, and urban studies. This year I've also been working with Colorado Interfaith Power and Light, part of a national movement to lead a religious response to climate change. This fall we were fairly involved in the Obama campaign. Our son, Nathan, 25, was married this summer here in Denver; he and his bride are also living in Denver now. Daughter Leah graduated from University of the Arts, Philadelphia, in May. She and her husband live in Brooklyn, NY.

I have just retired from Citibank and plan to spend a great deal of my time in the various social responsibility activities in which I’m currently involved in Mexico. I also plan to teach at two of the local universities and will ensure that a strong dose of ethics is included in all the banking classes that I teach, something that was missing at Citi and other Wall Street institutions and the real cause of the global economic crisis that we’re currently experiencing. My email address is jdequesada@hotmail.com.

I think that my information is up to date, but I thought that I'd drop a couple of lines for the class notes. I have retired from Bowdoin College, after serving as the women's soccer coach for 22 years. I am now working in the woods, implementing woodlot management plans for individuals and small groups. I am affiliated with a working group called Low Impact Forestry. It aims to do sustainable harvests with horses and small equipment on a small scale. It keeps me busy and outdoors.
Thanks for passing this on.

I work in air quality and climate change for ICF International, a large consulting firm. My wife, 2 sons, and I live in Lexington, MA, where we’re also heavily involved in therapeutic and educational approaches for children with Asperger’s Syndrome. Here's to the Brown Band and the Brown Association for Cooperative Housing (it that still its name?), where I had my best times at college.

Marc Silverstein and Stu Himmelfarb
Marc Silverstein '74, P'12, P'13, his son Zach Silverstein '13, Marc's significant other, Lisa Meek, and fellow classmate Stu Himmelfarb '74 climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in July 2013. Nominally, the trip was in celebration of Zach’s graduation from Brown and Marc’s 60th birthday, both of which occurred in May 2013. But our trek also coincided with the one year anniversary of the passing of Marc’s mother / Zach’s grandmother, Marilyn Silverstein, who died last August from Alzheimer’s disease. And Stu's mother also died from Alzheimer’s, six years ago. Therefore, we dedicated our trek to Marilyn Silverstein and Belle Himmelfarb, and sought to raise $1 per meter of Kilimanjaro's elevation in support of the Alzheimer's Association. I am pleased to report that we successfully reached both goals. (Uhuru Peak is 5,895 meters high (19,341 feet), and we raised over $6,200 to help the Alzheimer's Association.)
I have attached several photos from the trek. The photos are: (1) Stu, Marc, and Zach wearing Brown U. T-shirts at the end of the trek; (2) Marc and Stu with Kibo in the background; (3) Lisa and Marc at the top; (4) Zach "Tebowing" at the top; (5) Stu at top of Kibo. SEE PHOTOS in the Photo Gallery section of this Webpage.
