Course Information:
Dance is a pre‐professional course that fosters critical and process‐oriented thinking by developing fundamental skills in movement technique and composition. In pure and fusion forms, Ballet, Modern and Jazz techniques are aligned with historical context, anatomical awareness and components of physical fitness. It provides a nurturing environment in which students can develop both artistic skills and technical proficiency allowing them to pursue a professional dance career or continue their education at a college/university level.
IB Dance HL Year 1
During this year of study, students deepen their language to articulate how they process through the creation of a new choreographic work. Through a large and on-going project, students will document EVERY decision they make while completing their first required DP solo composition. They will also present their compositions in an informal Winter Dance Concert at the end of the semester. 3rd year students will also explore one world dance form and begin to observe the processes that have and continue to shape movement around the world. They will develop the skills necessary to compare varying movement forms.
IB Dance HL Year 2
During this final year of the dance program, the senior class is responsible for producing the Spring Dance Concert (with guidance). In addition to presenting much of the choreography they have created within the DP program, they are also responsible for organizing the production staff, schedule and creating all communication (with assistance/approval and guidance) for the concert for the larger community (press release, newsletter blurbs, poster, program, video excerpts, and much more). Even though students are finalizing details for their “final” presentations of choreographic works and performance, they will be challenged to consider whether the version they present is the “final” product.
