Course Information:

Analysis and Approaches is a two-year program of advanced mathematical studies designed for students who enjoy developing their mathematics to become fluent in the construction of mathematical arguments, problem solving, exploring real and abstract applications, with and without technology, and developing strong skills in mathematical thinking. This course is intended for students who wish to pursue studies in mathematics, engineering, physical sciences, and some economics at university (or other subjects that have a large mathematical content). This course builds on the concepts of Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 in preparation for the standard-level IB Analysis and Approaches examination in the spring of students’ senior year. Students examine topics in algebra; functions; geometry and 16 trigonometry; statistics and probability; and differential and integral calculus. Students carry out an individual mathematical investigation using skills learned before and during the course.

Prerequisite: An average of 85+ in Geometry or 80+ in Algebra 2. Students must pass the Algebra 1 (or Geometry) Regents with an 80 or higher. Teacher recommendation is required. Students must earn a yearlong average of 65% or higher in Year 1 in order to move on to Year 2.
