FAQ

What is a Chromebook?

A Chromebook is a laptop computer that runs the Chrome Operating System (Chrome OS). Unlike traditional laptops that run Windows or Mac OS, Chromebooks run apps that are designed to run in the Chrome browser and are mostly web-based. Chromebooks also have functionality that allows them to be used offline without an internet connection.

Why Chromebooks?

The district decided on Chromebooks for several reasons including speed, features, cost and relevance. With today's technology, many applications that used to have to be installed on a computer are being made available as web-based apps. Chromebooks are designed to take advantage of this change in technology. The Chromebook also starts up in less than 10 seconds which means students can get to work much quicker.

Students will have access to Google Apps for Education tools on Chromebooks and any other web-based device. The tools provided allow the district to teach students skills such as word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, website creation and online courses. Collaborative tools are also included which aid students in working together on group projects.

Chromebooks have been designed to be affordable at a cost less than half of a traditional laptop. For this reason, many districts across the country are able to take advantage of these savings and reach more students with more devices. Quality and experience have not been sacrificed for the price.

Will students be allowed to take the Chromebooks home?

Yes, students will be allowed to take their Chromebook home. Every student 7-12 will be assigned a unique device that will be tracked by serial number. They will also receive a charger that is linked to their Chromebook's serial number. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that they keep track of their device and charger and bring it to school charged and ready for class each day.

I've heard about BYOD. What is that and can students bring their own device?

BYOD is an acronym for Bring Your Own Device. This is an initiative that many schools support, including Bradford. Students are permitted to bring their own devices to school. Their use of the district's network, regardless of what device they're using, is still subject to the Acceptable Use Policy that both you and your student are required to sign before using district technology.

What if I don't have internet access at home? How will my child be able to complete their homework?

The district is working with teachers to provide training on the resources that are available for Chromebooks. Some assignments and homework can be completed offline without an internet connection.

When will my child receive the Chromebook?

Your child will receive their Chromebook the week of February 22. The district will be hosting a kick-off assembly to share the program and expectations with students.

What happens if the Chromebook is lost or damaged?

If a Chromebook is lost or damaged, please report the incident as soon as possible to the school office or email chromebook-support@bradfordcsd.org. At this point in time, we are hopeful that no cost will be associated with this device; however, we need your support in ensuring devices are used appropriately and carefully. If damaged or destroyed Chromebooks become an issue, the district may need to re-evaluate the “no cost” practice and require a minimal security deposit or down payment be collected to help in the replacement or repair of damaged Chromebooks.

Will unsafe or inappropriate websites be filtered on the devices?

The district provides filtering compliant with federal and state law on all district-owned computers, laptops, tablets and other internet-enabled devices. The Chromebooks will be controlled with an additional layer of protection that will filter unsafe or inappropriate websites when the Chromebook is not connected to the district's network. In fact, any time the Chromebook is connected to the internet, it will be filtered in accordance with the district's filtering policies.
