Enterprise Architecture
An Enterprise Architecture is a structured framework of linking business, strategy and technology, primarily information technology. An Enterprise Architecture logically describes how technology support business processes and strategy for competitive advantage and stages of capital investments for future state of an enterprise. Enterprise Architecture is divided into Segmented Architectures or Enterprise Architecture for each Line of Businesses (LOBs). Each Enterprise Architecture must define a line-of-sight, from business strategy all the way down to technology that implements and/or supports it. An well-defined Enterprise Architecture helps organizations handles IT complexity in a fast changing world by providing a technology roadmap. A organization without an Enterprise Architecture is similar to a car without a driver.
An enterprise consists of mission, goals, business model, growth strategy, people, processes, applications, data, metadata, network infrastructure, hardware and software platforms, security infrastructure, corporate policies, government regulations—to name a few of these entities. Enterprise Architecture provides a way to describe all these entities in a coherent and logical fashion and allows owners, executives, management and Enterprise Architects. Architects capture the current or “as-is” state and work with stakeholders to define what would be the future or “to-be” state including the transition plan to get there. These development activities are well defined processes under various Enterprise Architecture Frameworks such as FEAF, DODAF, TOGAF, Zachman and others. Governance provides the structured approach to transition from “as-is” state to a “to-be” state. It is likely that there will be several intermediate states as part of the transition plan.
