For many NYC high school students, November 4 was a day off from school for Election Day. But for the Chelsea CTE High School NetSci High team, it was a day of exploration. The Chelsea Cisco Networking Academy teacher John Tebbett and his 8 NetSci High students (both this year's and last year's teams) had the exciting opportunity to visit Cisco headquarters in Midtown Manhattan, as part of the NYC Department of Education STEM Career Day. After enjoying bagels and beverages, the group joined with other visiting high school students in the 9th floor "Briefing Room". There they met with Cisco employees - who told their personal career path stories - and were shown the latest in Cisco telepresence tools. It was also an opportunity to talk about the broad and meaningful ways in which Cisco is involved at Chelsea High School. Mr. Tebbett gave an excellent description of the Cisco Networking Academy and its effect on one student in particular, and the team also spoke about Cisco's wide-ranging support at New York Hall of Science -- through the TP room as well as Cisco's vital support of the NetSci High project -- and then briefly described the NetSci High program. Then came the highlight-- the 8 Chelsea NetSci High students spoke about their Network Science research, and how their experience in the CNA and NetSci High has influenced their interest in STEM careers and future choices.
Finally the team received an excellent overview and exposure to what Cisco can offer in terms of future STEM career choices. The students were able to hear first-hand from 9 Cisco employees about their career paths, covering staff who have been working at Cisco anywhere from 3 months to 16 years, both in-person as well as remotely from Cisco staff in Costa Rica and Raleigh, North Carolina. All in all it was an outstanding opportunity for the Chelsea students!
