Singapore Math Resources

Singapore Math emphasizes the development of conceptual understanding prior to the teaching of procedures. A powerful, hands-on, visual approach—a progression from concrete to pictorial to abstract—is used to introduce concepts, which at the core include strong number sense, place value, and problem solving. As you look vertically at the Common Core Math Standards, you will notice that the standards build from conceptual understanding into the procedural strategies or traditional algorithms.

Singapore Math strategies and methods connect well with the Common Core Math Practice and Content Standards. Some people think that Singapore Math is a "program". There are certainly several programs that can be purchased. However, learning and implementing these strategies that have worked so well in Singapore can be embedded within the activities that you do in your pacing guide would be very powerful in building a deeper understanding of mathematics.
