Number Line Resources

A Number Line is a valuable strategy and tool for adding and subtracting numbers. It is interesting to think about the progression of this number line. Prior to first grade, students are counting using concrete objects and other tools such as a number line. It is important that they have opportunities to place and build numbers on a number line. (Note: Concrete and pictorial experiences that are LESS ABSTRACT should be done first!)

It is also critical that students recognize that when we count on a number line, we are adding 1 each time we move to the right. Often times, young students don't make this connection. Through the use of building towers, student can see the quantities and relationship between numbers on a number line.
