Club Structure
Our club will meet in the Middle School Library or Cafeteria. We recognize that some students may not be able to participate due to other extracurricular activities, which is why we intentionally vary our days of play.
Players also do NOT have to attend all meetings. It is 'come when you can!'
Players need no experience! Very few of our players learned to play chess outside of our club... which means that most of them started in the same place that anyone who has no experience is starting!
Student Participation Procedure
All New & Returning Players:
NO STUDENT WILL BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE WHO DOES NOT HAVE A "PARTICIPATION APPROVAL FORM" ON FILE
Step 1
Fill out our Participation Approval Form online here:
PLEASE NOTE: YOU ONLY FILL THIS OUT 1 TIME EACH YEAR...
IT'S NOT AN RSVP FOR EACH WEEK!

(Returning players are asked to fill this to update contact information)
Step 2
After completing the form, email Dr. Klugman to confirm your form's submission. mklugman@bethlehemschools.org
Bethlehem Central School District Chess Club is an officially recognized affiliate of the United States Chess Federation thanks to the generous support of Bethlehem Opportunities Unlimited (BOU). Why we exclude students younger than 3rd grade
Bethlehem's chess club is a "teaching club," meaning we have a classroom lesson for students every time we meet that involves students sitting and being participatory for 20 to 30 minutes. During this time period, students need to have enough self-regulatory development to sit quietly and engage.
In our observation, when parents force younger students to engage in an environment prior to students being ready, students lose their love of the game. In many cases students will stop playing completely and we discourage any activity that will cause a student to pull back from their enjoyment of chess.
It has been demonstrated that children younger than 3rd grade can become extraordinarily proficient at chess so we do not discourage private play. We only caution parents about placing children this young in any environment that may have a large student to teacher ratio.
