Overview

You are going to read an opinion article and watch a video that provide different ideas and viewpoints about books like To Kill a Mockingbird. Your job is to understand the arguments and ideas in each and draw your own conclusions about the question: Should schools teach books like To Kill a Mockingbird?

Step 1: It’s time to rethink our schools' reading lists for diversity

Read the article "It’s time to rethink our schools' reading lists for diversity" and complete the note sheet found in Google Classroom.

Step 2: "To Kill a Mockingbird": Lessons for today

Watch the video "To Kill a Mockingbird: Lessons for today" posted in Google Classroom and complete the questions in the EdPuzzle found in Google Classroom.

Step 3: Online discussion

Find the online discussion question, "Should schools teach To Kill a Mockingbird?" in Google Classroom.

Post your answer to the question.

  • Your answer should include evidence from BOTH the article and the video.

  • Your first post should be written as a good paragraph with

      • a clear topic sentence answering the question,

      • supporting ideas that provide evidence,

      • and a clear concluding sentence.

  • Mechanics (spelling & punctuation) need to be clear enough so that other students will understand what you are saying, but do not need to be perfect.
