Lessons:
Time will be spent in class, working with students and focusing on new material along with spending extra time with students on the more difficult topics. In order to be able to spend more time in class working with students, your child will be asked to watch a video and/or take notes on a lesson prior to discussing the new content in class. With technology use growing and the abundance of resources for students to use, having students watch the video beforehand will enhance our classroom discussions. This will also be a helpful tool for students and parents, as concepts that are forgotten or are confusing can be reviewed by accessing the video anytime to review the material. The videos will not take the place of teacher instruction; instead, the videos will be used as a tool to provide students with additional, background knowledge to be used the next day when discussing new concepts/skills. Students will have many opportunities to ask questions and work on the skill the next day in class, enhancing their hands-on learning time.
Grading Policies:
The following details my homework grading policy for this school year (please note the categories on the left-hand side):
The following details my marking period grading policy for this school year:
Classwork participation: 20%
Homework: 30%
Quizzes: 20%
Tests: 30%
Class Work/Participation: (point values vary)
Students are required to keep a folder/binder to help organize class notes, handouts, homework assignments etc.
Daily participation is strongly encouraged as students will be working in cooperative groups each day!
Quizzes/Tests: (types of questions & point values will vary)Weekly quizzes will be given at the end of the week as well as daily exit slips for various lessons to assess student understanding
At the end of each chapter, a chapter test will be administered
Students must show all work to receive full credit!!
Homework: (points will vary)
Why I assign Homework: "Math is NOT a spectator sport" - you must practice to get better!
It reinforces skills and materials learned in class, prepares students for upcoming class topics, and aids in evaluating student progress
It teaches students to work independently & assume responsibility for their own work and helps with organizational and time-management skills
When/What Homework will be assigned:
Students should expect to be assigned homework assignments daily and are required to show all work to receive full credit! Showing your thought process on paper, rather than just an answer, is extremely important! If the answer is incorrect, we can check your work and search for the error.
Students will be given a variety of homework assignments. Most homework assignments will be problems assigned from the textbook and be worth 4 points. A rubric for book work assignments will be given to each student and is posted on my school website. However, there will be times where worksheets or online homework may be assigned. Depending on the assignment type the amount of points for the homework assignment can change. Students will be notified how much the assignment is worth.
Student's Homework Responsibilities:
Students have an online textbook that they should use. However, a student/parent may request a textbook to keep at home since every student will have their own computer to use during the school day.
Grading is based upon completion, student work, and accuracy. Students should put forth their best effort and complete every assignment given ON TIME!
I expect homework to be done NEATLY in PENCIL! NO Pens, Markers, Colored Pencils!
I expect students to do the work on their own and ask for help only after they have given it their best effort, referencing their class notes and reading the lesson/examples given in the textbook first
Absent/Make-up work:
It’s the student’s responsibility to find out what he/she has missed & is required to complete any missed work within the number of days absent. They must show the teacher a valid blue excused absence slip upon return. I encourage students to make up assignments before/after school or in a homework hall to avoid missing additional class time.
Homework assignments and notes can be found on Google classroom.
Teacher's Homework Responsibilities:
I will check HWK daily and keep record of assignments completed and NOT completed.
Because I strongly believe in the value of supportive feedback plays in motivating a child to develop good study habits, I will recognize students when they do their HWK and offer incentives!
Parent's Homework Responsibilities:
Parents are the key to making HWK a positive experience for their child. Therefore, I ask that parents make HWK a top priority, provide necessary supplies & a quiet HWK environment, set a daily HWK time, provide praise & support, not let your child avoid doing HWK, & contact me if they notice a problem.
If students do NOT complete homework/Tutoring:
Each time a student misses a HW assignment, he/she must complete a “NO HW FORM” & is required to attend lunch math tutoring the same day the HW is missed to make it up for half credit! If the student does not attend tutoring, no credit will be given. If the student attends tutoring but doesn't finish the work, the tutoring teacher will determine if the student was on task & may allow the student to finish the work during hw hall/at home and turn it in the next day for half credit.
On the 4th zero within a marking period, he/she will receive a detention!
After school tutoring will be assigned to students who are failing or need extra help understanding concepts.
Suggested Materials
1-Subject Notebook – Students will be provided with note packets for each chapter while in class. However, I recommend that students have a small notebook for additional notes, or in the event that schools are changed to remote learning.
Pencil/Eraser – As we are not permitted to use shared supplies this year, “extra” pencils for students to borrow this year will be very limited. It is crucial that students come to class prepared, including a pencil.
Folder/Binder – Students will be provided with note packets and other handouts throughout the year. It is important that they have a place to keep these organized and accessible.
Headphones – Students may be given time to watch assigned videos in class or during a homework hall.
Rewards:
Students who behave appropriately will be supported with positive verbal reinforcement, positive parent communication emails/phone calls, small class rewards, PBIS Dojo Points, and other special privileges.
Consequences:
If a student fails to meet the above expectations the following will occur:
1. Verbal warning
2. Parent contact - email, phone call, face-to-face meeting
3. Written referral to the office
