School Counselors teach Guidance Class universally to all students. It is like scaffolding, providing students a structure with which to build their lives. Giving support and guidance in three main areas; Academics, Social and Emotional Health, and Career or College readiness.
Counselors also assist students with an immediate personal concern, a crisis, or an issue that may be affecting their achievement in school. The counselor may provide short-term individual sessions, small groups, consultations, crisis counseling, peer facilitation, and referrals to outside agencies.
The school counselor acts as an advocate for students through professional development, consultation, collaboration, and program management. The counselor assists in the referral process of students to appropriate support programs and services provided both within the school setting and to outside agencies.
