Practicing Fluency at Home
My goal is to help our kids become expert readers. One way to do that is to improve reading fluency. A fluent reader knows the words on the page and can read them with expression at a comfortable, flowing rate. Daily practice will help develop these skills. And better fluency leads to better comprehension. Our students will have weekly(nightly) fluency homework. They will read the same story each night, trying to get quicker and more fluent with each reading. They will then answer 1-2 questions per night. Your child will be given a story at their guided reading level. The parent instructions are on the second page of each story. Students should be reading fluently at Level J by the end of First Grade, Level N by the end of Second Grade, and Level Q by the end of Third Grade.
