Video Digitization Project - 376 video tapes

Recently we have crossed a border from the analog reality of the last century to the digital world of the present. There is a need to preserve all the historic analog media, the essential material of the past, for posterity.

Auroville Archive is holding a large collection of video tapes in Umatic, Sony and other formats that are requiring a digitisation as soon as possible.

Among them there are records of Nirodbaran, the kindergarden, dance performance of Joy and Anu, dance performance of Gita & Krishna Kumar, footage of ‘After Storm 1991’, The Dream Seminar, Amravati play, Johnny lessons at the Pyramids, Pitanga Cultural Centre Opening, Dental Clinic footage, a potter’s workshop, and many other Auroville events dated from the 1970s onwards.

Budget requirements: 1,200 Rs. per tape, which includes handling and shipping with insurance to a previously used and reliable digital studio in Mumbai, cleaning and digitizing, copying video files onto our external hard drive, and shipping the tapes and the hard drive back to Auroville.

1 Phase: 75 tapes total Rs. 90,000/-

2 Phase: 150 tapes total Rs. 180,000/-

3 Phase: 151 tapes total Rs. 181,200/-

Total Digitizing Rs.4,51,200 /-

Additionally it would require an upgrade of an old Wisdom-Splendour computer for a better and faster video processing system that includes Intel processor, motherboard, memory and video editing software that totals Rs. 74,324/- . A half time maintenance for this project is also requested: 12 months x Rs. 12,000/- comes to Rs. 1,44,000/- which includes Rs. 24,000/- Auroville Contribution

Total is Rs. 6,69,524/-

Contingency, 10% - Rs. 66,952/- that will cover unexpected expenses and a contribution to Auroville administrative fees on donations received.

All total is Rs. 7,36,476/-

This project will be carried out by Wisdom-Splendour, a unit registered under Auroville Activities of Kattida Kalai Trust.

A copy of all the video files digitized will be given to Auroville Archives for preservation in their video bank. These materials will be available for study and research purposes upon request.

We are planning to process and publish some of these videos via online streaming channel(s) for public viewing. Whenever possible a formal permission from the concerned people will be asked and appropriate credits given.
