Course Description:

This course will provide students with classroom and lab experience in current and emerging engineering principles. A Digital Electronics class explores problem solving through a design development process. Digital Electronics engages students through a combination of activities-based, project-based, and problem-based learning. Instruction includes but is not limited to an introduction to: Analog Circuit Theory, Digital Circuit Theory, Combinational Logic, Sequential Logic, and Microcontrollers.

Course Purpose and Major Student – Centered Objectives:

Project Lead The Way course: Digital Electronics teaches applied logic through work with electronic circuitry, which students also construct and test for functionality. The goal of this course is to introduce you to fundamental engineering concepts and technologies. This course provides a hands-on introduction to engineering principles; technology systems and processes found in engineering and manufacturing environments. The materials and assignments will assist you in developing the skills necessary to understand the range of engineering applications. This course prepares you for some of the skills needed to enter and understand the basic requirements in the engineering field of study.

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

· Understand the potential impact their ideas and products may have on society

· Understand real world impacts thorough engineering

· Create simulation of both analog and digital circuits to analyze their outcomes

· Create and test a model of both analog and digital circuits using a breadboard

· Analyze problems through the use of logic and technology to solve them

· Participate on a team to develop a solution to a problem, using the design process

Grading Breakdown –

· Term Grades will be calculated on a total point’s basis.

· Student grade = (Total Points Earned/Total Points Possible).

· Each term will count 30% towards the final grade.

· The final PLTW exam will count 10% towards the final grade.

· Late assignments will be accepted with partial credits scores.

Letter Grade System:

B+ 88–89 C+ 78-79 D+ 68 – 69

A 93-100 B 83-87 C 73-77 D 65 – 67

A- 90-92 B- 80-82 C- 70-72 F Below 65

Course Policies and Procedures:

Term Projects:

Term projects will be assigned per term and will align with the material currently being covered. The projects will require the use of the designated design process and proof of the use will be submitted in several ways including a report of the project. Typical term projects will include: random number generator, birthday generator, seven segment display decoder and microprocessor program development. Projects will be turned in with a formal report, which will include but not limited to a perspective paper, simulation drawings, logic tables, photographs, graphs and test data, title page, and other relevant documents. Class time will be given to help complete the project, but work outside the classroom will be required to finish any of the projects.

Classroom Etiquette:

There is no permissible use of iPods, cell phones, laptops, desktops, handheld gaming devices or similar devices in class at anytime. If a student is caught using one of the above devices they will be asked to turn it off and if the use continues the device will be collected and sent to the Dean of Students. Taking notes is encouraged by all students and will be added to the notebooks for periodical review. During lab computer equipment will be available to complete assignments.

Attendance:

After school help sessions will be on Wednesday and Thursday. You must sign up to prior to attending the help sessions. The class functions as a team. Any absence reduces the value of the course for every other student.

iPass:

iPass will be used to post all grades. Each student and parent has his or her own username and password, and will be able to see only their child’s information and grades. The website can be accessed anywhere there is internet access.

Pre-Engineering Website:

https://sites.google.com/a/assabet.org/pre-engineering

Extra Credit:

No extra credit work will be assigned, for any reason, ever.

Extra Curricular Activities:

Students who participate in a extracurricular activity at Assabet Valley by being a member of a club or organization will have 2 points added to their term grade. Students must have documentation proving their involvement in the club and must maintain a GPA semester average of at least 3.0
