We are very excited about the upcoming year, and look forward to a fun and rewarding experience teaching 6th grade Math. Our curriculum is based on the Big Ideas Math program, which aligns with the new Massachusetts Core Common Standards for grade 6.
The topics we will cover include the following:
Ratios and Proportional Relationships
Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems.
The Number System
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to dividing fractions.
Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples.
Apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers.
Expressions and Equations
Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions.
Reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities.
Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables.
Geometry
Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume.
Statistics and Probability
Develop understanding of statistical variability.
Summarize and describe distributions.
For your convenience, we have put together an outline of goals and expectations for our class.
A. Homework
Math homework is very important. In order to reinforce the daily lessons, we assign homework almost every night. We review homework at the beginning of each class so students have the chance to correct problems and ask questions. All assignments must be completed in pencil with your full name at the top of the sheet.
We review homework for quality and completeness every day. Students receive a check mark (√) for satisfactory work, a check plus (√+) for excellent work and effort, and a check minus (√-) for incomplete work. If you forget your homework, you can stay after to complete the assignment for full credit.
B. Grading Policy
Students are expected to demonstrate a satisfactory understanding of the topics outlined above. Assessment of this understanding is made through regularly scheduled tests and quizzes, weekly work submission on google docs, teacher assigned work, in-class and at-home projects.
A student’s trimester grade is based on an average of the items below:
50% Assessments (Quizzes and Tests)
30% Assignments
20% Classwork
Buy Back Policy : Students who receive less than a 70 on any assessment will be allowed to redo their mistakes on that assessment to raise their score to a 70.
C. Communication Guidelines
We believe that communication between teachers, students and parents is a critical part of student success. Please feel free to see us if you have any questions about the materials covered in class, or if you ever need help with a particular math skill. Also, we strongly encourage parents to contact us with any questions or concerns they have about their child. We promise to respond to any calls, notes or emails in a timely fashion.
We look forward to working with you and your parents to make this a fun and successful year. Welcome to our class!
