MATH DEPARTMENT PHILOSOPHY
The educational goal of the math department, according to our school philosophy and standards, must reflect the importance of mathematical literacy. There are five general goals for all students to accomplish by the end of their high school education: (1) that they learn to value mathematics, (2) that they become confident in their ability to do mathematics, (3) that they become mathematical problem solvers with and without the use of technology, (4) that they learn to communicate mathematically, and (5) that they learn to reason mathematically. These goals imply that students should be exposed to numerous and varied interrelated experiences that encourage them to value the mathematical enterprise. They should develop mathematical habits of mind and understand and appreciate the role of mathematics in human affairs. They should be encouraged to explore, to guess, and even to make and correct errors so that they gain confidence in their ability to solve complex problems. They should read, write, and discuss mathematics. Finally, they should conjecture, test, and build arguments about a conjecture’s validity.

My name is Ma. Leticia Garcia. I graduated from the American School of Guadalajara in 1982. I studied Chemical Engineering at the ITESO with a minor in business administration. I have a master in education from CEP (Centro de Estudios de Postgrado) Jalisco: Maestría en Educación con Intervención en la Práctica Educativa. I also have a "diplomado" from the Tec. de Monterrey in "Tendencias Educativas". I got my doctoral degree in “Gestión Escolar” (School Management) from CEP. I have been working at the American School since 1986 teaching Physics, Chemistry, Geometry, Algebra 2, PreCalculus and Calculus (honors, advanced placement, and college preparatory). I am the current Math Department Head and AP Coordinator.

IMPORTANT QUOTES TO REMEMBER
If we follow certain rules and routines, if we understand our rights and responsibilities and if we respect each other, we will have an excellent learning environment.
It is alright to make mistakes, they make your math mind grow and give you opportunities to learn. So during this course, mistakes will always be expected, respected, and inspected.
Galileo once said:
…The universe stands continually open to our gaze, but it cannot be understood unless one first learns to comprehend the language and interpret the characters in which it is written. It is written in the language of mathematics, and its characters are… geometric figures, without which it is humanly impossible to understand a single word of it; without these, one is wandering about in a dark labyrinth.
