Curriculum and Grading

Reading

First grade is an extremely important grade for reading development. We will meet regularly for reading groups using challenging but appropriate books for your child’s individual level. Phonics and phonemic awareness are pieces of learning to read as well and will be worked on many times each week.

 Writing

Writing is another key ingredient in learning to read, comprehend, and communicate throughout life. 

We will write daily in a variety of forms for a variety of reasons. We have free writes, journal topics, reading responses, and technical writing instruction.

Science

Our first unit will be Alaskan animals. We will learn about light and sound second semester.

 Math

We use the Saxon Math program at Aquarian. Your child will be placed in a math class that corresponds with his or her math ability. Every student attends math daily.

In my math class, assessments are given every five lessons. When fact families are introduced, there will also be weekly fact tests. Both of these are your child's achievement grade. Effort is based on timely homework completion and class participation.
