flipped learning

description of intentions

as part of a research project for my master's degree program through UW-River Falls, during the spring of 2014 I gathered research on the effectiveness of using a flipped learning approach with the presentation of information pertaining to learning about pottery wheels, how to gather tools, and learn how to throw a cylinder on the wheel.

as many of you may be new to the idea of flipped learning and what it really means, I have embedded a video that I think does a great job of explaining this idea for both students and parents.

day 1 assignment:

1.) learning from videos - flipping physics (watch this first)

2.) watch this video

for flipped learning materials:

although this video is created by a physics teacher, the format of the class will be similar to the format of our intro to clay class. this ideas will remain the same, with only the way in which content is delivered will change

instructional question:

what are the main differences in a flipped learning approach and a traditional classroom format?

***all assignments should be completed prior to class***

day 2 assignment:

(there are multiple videos you are responsible for)

  • watch part one: introduction to the wheel

  • remember to follow the f.i.t.c.h acronym when learning from videos

  • create a WSQ for the first video to share in class - page 44 in your interactive notebook

  • essential question: What are all the necessary components that make up the electric pottery wheel?

  • any questions you have should be discussed early so no one is confusion as we move forward!

day 2 assignment continued:

  • watch part two: introduction to the tools

  • remember to follow the f.i.t.c.h acronym when learning from videos

  • create a WSQ for part two of the video - page 44 in your interactive notebook

  • essential question #1: What are the necessary tools you need to have with you at the wheel?

  • essential question #2: What are other considerations you need to be aware of while at the wheel?

day 2 assignment continued:

  • watch part three: centering and opening (embedded below)

  • remember to follow the f.i.t.c.h acronym when learning from videos

  • create a WSQ to guide our discussion before work time - Centering & Opening Cornell Notes Template

  • essential question: What are the necessary steps you need to be aware of during the centering phase of throwing on the wheel?

day 2 formative assessment:

  • complete the wheel pretest prior to class - page 46 in your interactive notebook

  • we will be discussing the answers to this pretest as a means of acknowledging our viewing of the videos

day 3 - 5 assignment:

  • complete the wheel pretest prior to class - page 46 in your interactive notebook

  • we will be discussing the answers to this pretest as a means of acknowledging our viewing of the videos

day 6 assignment:

  • watch part four: pulling & finishing (embedded below)

  • remember to follow the f.i.t.c.h acronym when learning from videos

  • create a WSQ to guide our discussion before work time - page 47 in your interactive notebook

  • essential question #1: What are the two different hand positions for thinning the walls on a thrown cylinder?

  • essential question #2: What should each hand be doing during the act of pulling?

day 7 - 9 assignment:

  • work time - opportunities for learning & questioning on pulling & finishing

day 10 assignment:

  • watch throwing a bowl - is also located below

  • remember to follow the f.i.t.c.h acronym when learning from videos

  • create a WSQ for the video to share in class - page 49

  • essential question #1: What are the main differences between throwing a bowl and a cylinder? (fill out the attached venn diagram template within notes template)

  • essential question #2: What is the most important part/component of a thrown bowl?

day 11 assignment:

  • watch trimming a bowl - is also located below

  • remember to follow the f.i.t.c.h acronym when learning from videos

    • create a WSQ for the video to share in class - page 51

  • essential question #1: What are the essential tools for trimming any leatherhard pots?

  • essential question #2: How is trimming similar to throwing in process and speed?

day 12 assignment:

  • throw a bowl with 1 - 1.5 lbs of clay and trim it at the leatherhard stage

day 13 assignment

  • work time - throwing a bowl & trimming it

day 14 assignment

  • final assessment of knowledge through the wheel competency test

day 15 assignment

  • final assessment of knowledge through the wheel competency test

  • grading rubric will be completed by me and feedback will be sent back to you either in paper/digital/individual conference

  • submission of all WSQ documents to schoology dropbox
