The following groups may be offered throughout the school year at EHS. Please reach out to your social worker if you are interested in joining one of them.
Grief Groups
The Growing Through Grief Program is for students who have experienced and/or anticipate the death of a loved one, primarily parents and siblings. The program is in partnership with Park Nicollet Health Services / Methodist Hospice and Edina Public Schools. The program allows the school district the opportunity to utilize grief counselors to facilitate grief support groups and/or meet individually with students in need of support. The grief counselors are also available to do in-service presentations on child/teenage grief. You can obtain further information by reading here and/or watching this Growing Through Grief video.
Stress Management Seminar
Most people struggle at times to effectively manage their stress. In today's society, it is easy to become overwhelmed and worn out by our many interests and obligations. For some people, daily tasks and social interactions can be anxiety producing. Regardless of their particular triggers, students in this seminar will learn about and practice a variety of positive coping strategies. This seminar will be approximately 6 weeks long, depending on the size and pace of the group. It will be offered as part of the curriculum in a few courses, as well as on a rotating schedule like other support groups. Referrals can be made by students, parents or school staff by contacting their social worker directly.
General Support Groups
In addition to the groups listed above, we offer general support groups through the Options Program and Seminar Classes. Students not in these programs are occasionally invited to join a group based on identified needs. These groups are informal and topics will vary based on the needs and interests of the group. In the past, we have discussed chemical use, self esteem, healthy relationships, goal setting, and conflict resolution among other things. Groups are sometimes divided by gender or age due to the sensitivity of the some of the topics.
** Unless otherwise noted, groups will meet weekly throughout the school year. Though they are scheduled during the school day, meeting times will rotate so that students miss each course only once every 5-6 weeks. Groups will not meet during 4th and 5th hours due to varied lunch schedules.
