In a course such as band or orchestra, the term "Extra Credit" doesn't really exist. It's the philosophy of our department that students and families participate in the program simply due to a sincere desire to perform at their best, and push themselves musically and otherwise.
However, since grades are of significant importance within the structure of the school, since performance is the primary purpose of the program, and given the challenges of the lesson schedule in particular, "Extra Credit" is awarded to students for musical performances outside of the regular school curriculum. Proof, such as a program listing the student, is required for such extra credit to be awarded. Most often, the credit is given to the "Lessons" portion of the overall average, unless otherwise needed or requested.
These performances could range from church performances, to recitals, to parade performances, or community orchestra performances. Other opportunities also exist!
The amount of credit awarded is determined based upon the level of preparation and performance, and can range from part of a lesson to an entire lesson's worth of credit (typically 5 points of the quarter average).
