Each year guidance works with 8th grade students, teachers, and families to help students prepare for the transition to high school!
Overview:
Students at NCS have choice in their high school. As of the 2025-2026 school year, Nobleboro does not provide transportation to any high school. While our students are tuitioned to attend Lincoln Academy, other high schools such as Medomak Valley, Oceanside, and Erskine are available if a family feels it would be a better fit. Please contact me directly if you'd like to discuss options other than Lincoln Academy for your student.
The transition process usually kicks off with Lincoln Academy hosting their annual “Family Night” for families of current eighth grade students. We encourage families to attend this event, as it is a great opportunity to learn about the details of the transition process, as well as get questions answered about high school life at Lincoln Academy.
Shortly after family night, Lincoln Academy will visit NCS eighth graders on multiple occasions to discuss scheduling, courses, and credits. The Lincoln Academy guidance staff provide students with course guides and worksheets to help them map out a tentative four year plan. Lincoln staff will also speak about the various requirements for graduation, what they offer for electives, as well as the vocational options for upperclassmen. In addition, Lincoln Academy will discuss the possibility of taking honors courses, which requires students’ obtaining teacher recommendations and taking placement tests toward the end of this school year.
As the transition process unfolds, eighth graders will eventually select the courses they want to take during their freshman year. Both the 8th grade teachers and I will work with students individually to help them choose appropriate options. Ultimately they will bring home their selections for parents to view, discuss with them, and sign.
This is undoubtedly an exciting time for our eighth grade students as they begin to look toward their high school future. It is our hope that parents continue to be actively involved throughout this experience and take advantage of opportunities like Lincoln Academy’s family night in order to assist their child in making the best choices for him or her.
