The following skills from 7th and 8th grade are essential to being successful in Secondary I. Students who come to Secondary I with a solid understanding of these concepts can be confident that they are ready for 9th grade math!
Add, subtract, multiply & divide integers (positive and negative whole numbers) & fractions
Solve one and two-step equations
Simplify expressions by combining like terms, distributing or both
Solve multi-step equations with variables on both sides
Solve one and two-step inequalities and graph the solution on a number line
Plot points on a graph and write the point (x, y) given points on a graph
Find the slope, x and y-intercept of a line given a graph, equation, table or two points
Write the equation of a line in y = mx + b form given a graph, equation, table or two points
Graph a line given the equation in y = mx + b form
Know what the parts of y = mx + b represent
Know how to find the perimeter and area of a square, rectangle, circle, rhombus, triangle and trapezoid
