Associate Professor, Geology

University of Alaska Fairbanks

Teaching

I teach a variety of classes, from introductory geology to advanced structural geology

Other

My other main professional interest is science communication. I work toward making science accessible to the general public. As former co-director of the EarthScope National Office, I helped to publicize and archive scientific outcomes of the project: https://www.earthscope.org/

Research

I am a tectonicist. I like to figure out geological histories of places. Right now I am focused on the southern Alaska margin, particularly the Talkeetna arc. How was it emplaced and how was it accreted to southern Alaska? In greater detail, I study microstructures of rocks deformed at and below the brittle-plastic transition. I am interested in the faults that are related to arc accretion:

What do rock fabrics record about the temperature, stress, strain rate, and direction of motion along faults?
