INTRODUCTION TO AGRICULTURE, FOOD, AND NATURAL RESOURCES-Part 1

Length: One Trimester Grades: 8, 9,10,11,12
Prerequisite: none
This beginning agriculture course will provide students with the knowledge needed to get ready for the next level of Agriculture. Units include basic Agriculture, FFA, Animal Science, Plant Science, Food Science, and Natural Resources.

Length: Two Trimesters Grades: 9,10,11,12
Prerequisite: Introduction to Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources-Part 1
This first year agriculture course will provide students with the knowledge needed to explore world agriculture, commodities, and FFA. Basic units included are: animal nutrition and reproduction, food science, and natural resources. Other units included are biotechnology, hydroponics, greenhouse plants and aquaculture.
NATURAL RESOURCES
½ credit elective NO.
Length: One Trimester Grades: 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Introduction to Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources or Instructor’s permission.
This class focuses on natural resources such as forests, fish, wildlife, and water. Other units will include soil, precision agriculture, energy, and recreation. Laboratory experiences will include aquaculture, taxidermy, custom pole building, aging deer, and scoring antlers. Students will visit these areas for on-site labs.
FOOD SCIENCE & MEAT PROCESSING

Length: One Trimester Grades: 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Introduction to Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources or Instructor’s permission.
This class will provide opportunities for students to prepare for a future career in food industry. Students will have a chance to cut up meat and make sausage and jerky. They will explore other aspects of food science, nutrients, nutrition, wholesale and retail cuts. Other activities may include dairy products, processing, and making pasta noodles. Visits to food processing businesses are planned.
PLANT SCIENCE

Length: Three Trimesters Grades: 11, 12
Prerequisite: Introduction to Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources or Instructor’s permission.

This plant class focuses on all parts of plant production. Students will explore tissue culture, agronomy, floral design, landscaping, and greenhouse plants. This class will plant, grow, and sell a crop of bedding plants. Juniors and seniors with a B or better will earn 3 credits at Mid-state Technical College (class transfers to UWSP).
ANIMAL AND VET SCIENCE

In this class students will study both large and small animals. The class will focus on selection, anatomy, feeding, reproduction, and other important information that will help students looking for a career in the animal area. Laboratory experience will include hatching eggs, shots, sutures, making food products, Casper Fish, and other animal experiments.
ADVANCED CONCEPTS IN AGRICULTURE, FOOD, AND NATURAL RESOURCES

Prerequisite: Introduction to Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources, another class, and Instructor’s Permission.
This class is designed for juniors and seniors who are interested in expanding their knowledge in an agriculture, food, and natural resource. Students are able to explore in an area beyond the available classes in their interest area or who have interest in an area not offered in the curriculum. It is a chance for students to develop and work on projects in their own specialty area. Approval is required from the instructor.

The Cooperative Agricultural Education Program Offers the student of junior or senior standing, who has been previously enrolled in the agriculture, food and natural resources program an opportunity to become gainfully employed in a part-time agriculturally related field.
