I.B. Units at a Glance:
We will cover six I.B. units this year in First Grade. I.B. units are driven by student inquiry and interest: Units begin with students sharing what they know about a topic and asking questions about that they wish to explore during the unit.
Each I.B. unit is woven throughout the day so that the books we read, writing opportunities, centers and supporting activities emphasize the lines of inquiry. In this way, students arrive at an enduring understanding of each topic, often leading to student action and additional exploration of a topic even after a unit has been completed.
I.B. classwork is kept at school and will be sent home at the end of the year in a portfolio. This allows students to reflect on their work throughout the year and to choose a piece of work to keep in their school portfolio that travels with them to Fifth Grade.
