About me

Welcome to your French or Spanish class. I guess you're interested in knowing a little about your teacher. Well, I started studying Spanish in high school, much like you. At the school I went to in Western New York State we didn't have the opportunity to start Spanish until ninth grade, which is when I did. I liked Spanish and did well in it in high school, so I continued to study it throughout my undergraduate and graduate studies in international business, during which time I also spent a semester in Tours, France and learned French. Since college, I have maintained my French and Spanish by seeking out opportunities to travel and study, and with my French- and Spanish-speaking friends. Including my first overseas trip in my senior year of high school, I have now been to Spain on five different occasions, to Mexico twice, I have also spent about a total of eight months in France, between seven different trips.

As you may have guessed, one of my favorite things to do is travel. My travels have taken me all over Western Europe, to parts of Eastern Europe, to Alaska, Mexico, Canada and Taiwan. I've been able to learn Spanish, French, and Romanian, in the process. I also met my wife:  a Romanian woman who I met in France.

Some ask how a teacher can afford to travel so much? Well, I've never been rich, but I have sought out opportunities to travel. Some of the ways I've been able to afford to travel are: through a study-abroad program at college, on a business trip (I went to Taiwan while working for a Japanese trading company), by staying with people I knew, by working in my destination, by applying for scholarships, by saving up money for the trips, and by borrowing extra on my college student loans. I strongly encourage anyone interested to travel as much and as early in life as possible. It's a life-changing experience that I have seen deepen the character and widen the perspective of many people.

Other things I like to do in my free time are:  play golf, ski, hike, camp, and spend time with my family and my friends. As many people did, I came to Colorado for the skiing and stayed because of the beautiful climate throughout the year. I came for the mountains in 1993, and spending time outside is still my favorite pastime.

As far as teaching goes, this is my twenty-second year at Legacy and my twenty-sixth year teaching. I spent the first four years teaching at Century Middle School. I feel privileged to have been able to change from international business to teaching, and to have been able to work in such good schools so far.

I guess that covers the basics. If you want to know more about your teacher, come talk some time. I am always glad to learn more about my students.

Mr. Hubbard
