Learning Targets: 9 Action Points
Formative v. Summative
Formative assessments are typically in-class practice work, admit/exit tickets, reflections, observations, reading notes.
Feedback is recorded in the gradebook as a 1-4 and is NOT counted towards the students' final grade in the subject/content area.
Summative assessments provide a snapshot of student learning at any given time. Examples may include, end of unit tests, mid terms, large papers and district and state assessments.
Feedback is recorded in the gradebook as a letter grade and IS counted towards students' final grade in the subject/content area. However, student can retake summative assessments if they fail to meet the learning targets.
Critique and Feedback
This is a video called 'Austin's Butterfly." Although the students in this video are in elementary, it provides an excellent example of how students can participate in the process of critique and feedback.
Student Self-Assessment & Reflection
Teaching students to self-assess helps them take ownership of their learning. They become more engaged in the learning process.
