Aplington-Parkersburg On-Site Return to

Learn Plan

Updated 8-10-2021

Please keep checking this site for updates as we review and respond to updated guidance from professional organizations.

Aplington-Parkersburg Schools will reopen for the 2021-22 school year on August 23rd with the opportunity to have all students in an on-site learning environment. Students can access learning in a traditional format with in-person learning.

A message to Parents: As of May 20, 2021, school districts in Iowa are prohibited from adopting or enforcing a policy that requires employees, students, or the public to wear a mask while on school property. As such, the district highly recommends the use of masks. Masks will be optional for students, teachers, and visitors.

All parts of this plan are subject to change based off of updated recommendations and requirements from local, state, or federal sources.

Alternate Models of Delivery -- The following terms and definitions are meant to help everyone with common terminology.

On-Site Learning Model-This is the preferred learning model. Students will access learning in a traditional format with in-person learning.

When on-site learning is the delivery model, medical situations of students or within households may necessitate a student to receive their education from home for health and safety reasons. The district does allow for a family to voluntarily have their child school from home for other reasons they feel significant (i.e. religious beliefs, undue stress/anxiety). This should be done in cooperation with administration and following district guidelines. [This is not the same as home schooling, also known in Iowa as Competent Private Instruction (CPI) or Independent Private Instruction (IPI).]

Optional: Schooling-from-Home During On-Site Learning Model

  • If your physician recommends your child(ren) not attend in-person learning due to a significant medical concern, please contact the administration for information regarding a self-paced, online learning program.

If your student is not attending On-Site Learning, he / she will not be able to attend any dances ( Homecoming, Winter Formal, Prom).

Remote, Continuous Learning Model (If the school would be closed due to unforeseen circumstances.)- The school will be closed, and all students will be learning remotely. Faculty and staff may also be working remotely, but could work from school unless there is a campus closure. All students are learning from home. Students learn from home, and with instruction and assignments delivered via computer or packets.

Key Terminology for On-Line Learning

Asynchronous:

Class interactions happen via learning system (canvas, google classroom and seesaw) without real-time interaction. Students engage in class materials and complete work at their own pace, typically within a given time-frame often using discussion boards to drive peer-to-peer engagement.

Video Conference:

A virtual meeting in which participants in different locations are able to communicate with each other with audio and video. We will use Zoom for this function.

Visitors to School- Aplington-Parkersburg Schools plans to limit visitors entering the building beyond the vestibule, or first entrance area. The following measures will help with this:

  • Entrances at each building will be used as drop-off and pick-up locations for student school items (ie “cold lunch” from home, band instrument, bookbags, library book) for pick-up packets/folders related to makeup work or students learning remotely, for extra-curricular equipment/supplies, etc. Parents/Caregivers are asked to please call ahead or at the time of drop off or retrieval to inform the office of your visit and what you picked up or dropped off.

  • Visitors may be invited in for special meetings such as IEPs, health-related meetings, discipline issues, or other meetings as approved by administration.

  • For all students who need to leave the building during school hours, (appointment, illness, need to leave early, etc.) parents will call the school office upon arrival to the building and the student will be released.

Direct Instruction

  • Teach proper hand washing technique

  • Responsible distancing in rooms and common spaces

  • No water fountain use. Student water bottles filled at touchless filling stations. (Students supply their own water bottle.)
