Q: Will students have their UC Personal Insight Questions or EOP Responses handy?
A: Maybe! Students may or may not come prepared with those documents on hand. If that is the case, it's okay! We have provided these questions for your reference here. Also, take this opportunity to get to know them. Ask questions, and gain enough information to brainstorm, outline, and compose scholarship responses together.
Q: Will 826LA provide a training to volunteers?
A: Yes; all new volunteers will be provided with a training tailored to their role. For volunteers working directly with students, they are required to complete the asynchronous personal statement training before the event. For Room Leaders, volunteers will need to attend either an in-person or virtual training to cover the logistics and responsibilities prior to the event. For Event Support Crew, directions and overview will be provided in an email in advance, in addition to day-of instructions.
Q: Will I need to stay for the entirety of the event?
A: Room Leaders and Student Success Support volunteers will need to stay the entire time to ensure consistency is provided to the students. Event Support Crew shifts are either full day or AM and PM half-day shifts.
Q: Who do I contact if I need help?
A: Each classroom will be assigned a room leader. Their role is to keep track of time, request support from the tech team as needed, answer questions about the event, support you and the students in the writing process as needed, and monitor student and volunteer interactions.
Q: If we didn't finish writing, can I exchange information with the student and continue working with them on my own time?
A: We know you are invested and will come to know your students well by the end of the session, but it is a strict 826LA policy that volunteers can not share personal contact information of any kind with students. Things you can not share include: email address, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, or any social media handles, and phone numbers. Additionally, volunteers are not allowed to take photos of students or with students unless done so by an 826LA photographer. Therefore, you are not allowed to share any personal photos of students on social media. If you’d like to share photos from the event, please repost using photos from 826LA’s Facebook, Flickr, Instagram, and Twitter accounts.
Q: Is a TB Test required for this event?
A: No, a negative TB test is not required to participate in this event.
Q: Will I be able to support other 826LA programs after the event?
A: If you're interested in becoming a regular volunteer with 826LA, please contact the Volunteer Team at volunteer@826la.org to learn more!
Q: How many personal statements are students expected to work on?
A: For this event, you will work on as many personal statements as you can with your student. Students are only focusing on the essay portions; creating an account and completing the rest of the application is their responsibility outside of this event.
Q: What do I do if I can no longer volunteer for this event?
A: Please email volunteer@826la.org to cancel
