What is a scholarship, bursary, award or loan?
Scholarships: money that you apply for to help with your educational costs
An entrance scholarship can be automatically applied to a student's tuition and is based on attaining a certain average. University of Manitoba and University of Winnipeg are examples of post-secondary institutions that offer entrance scholarships. There could also be entrance scholarships that require an application.
An external scholarships are given by organizations, employers, financial institutions and priate companies who offer financial support for students in their post-secondary education. These are varied in their requirements and diverse. Some external scholarship opportunities are shared with grade 12 students on a monthly basis. Accessing these scholarships involves the student to conduct some research. A good starying point is to have a look at scholarship data bases.
An "internal" or "convocation" scholarship is dstributed to students at convocation and is based on specific creiteria that may include things like (but not excusive to) community involvement, leadership, sport involvement, arts involvment. school involvement or academic achievement
Bursary: similar to a scholarship, but typically based on financial need (proof of financial need made be required)
Award: a general term for recognition or achievement such as academic achievement, community involvement, leadership etc. (May be monetary or non-monetary)
Financial Aid: can be in the form of a loan or grant.
A loan money that you need to pay back after a certain amount of time (apply through financial institutaion such as a bank or through a provinical/ federal program such as Manitoba Student Aid).
A grant is money that you appy for but do not need to pay back (apply through federal grant programs

Applying for Scholarships Workbook
Learn to brag about yourself. Use this workbook to get started. Often various awards will require you to write a little essay about yourself. Always remember to be truthful in what you share. You can also create a hard copy and digital folder that contains past awards, recognition, transcript, resume, reference letters during this step.Gather and save these in a digital folder. Scan, rather than screenshot important documents.

Recipients of these scholarships are chosen by a school scholarship commitee. Students receive notification of receiving one of these scholarships at the the graducation ceremony.
