Summer Activities for math, reading, and Japanese skill practice!

English Resources

• Emergent/Beginning Reading Series : Students should read everyday for at least 20 minutes. If your child is not reading fluently and is souding out words, use the resources below to practice phonics sounds. Have your child read outloud and help with any errors. Keep practicing until your child begins to read more confidently. Encourage your child to read the whole word (if they know it) and not get stuck sounding out everything.

• Fry's Third 100 Words and Fourth 100 Words #300-330: Practice some of these words each day. Try 10 a week, make flashcards with them and practice daily. Review the words your child has trouble with.

• Heggerty Phonemic Awarness Videos: Watch the Primary leveled videos.

Math Resources

• Kahn Academy : This is a free resource for students to review 2nd grade math skills. You can login or create an account for your child to track progress, but this is optional. Try working on a skill each week, and review any gaps. Our goal is for students to understand Base 10 (10 ones = ten, and Ten tens = one hundred) and use that understanding to manipulate numbers to add and subtract. Another goal is for students to be able to mentally add/subtract within 20.

• Worksheets: Try one or more worksheet a week. These review base 10, word problems, graphing, measurement. *We do not teach fractions in 4j during 2nd grade. Feel free to skip these. We also were not able to discuss shapes this year. Answer Key included.
