Synopsis

Today is Eddie's birthday.

Eddie is a 83-year-old maintenance manager at Ruby Pier who lives a resigned and routine life. He's alone and bitter over the mistakes he's made and misfortunes he's suffered. His left leg, permanently injured in combat during WWII, is a constant source of pain. The love of his life, Marguerite, passed away before they could adopt children together. Eddie works the same job his father once held as the maintenance man at Ruby Pier, the very place he once vowed to leave behind.

The Five People You Meet In Heaven opens in the last hour of Eddie's life. He's carrying out the same routine he has every day: maintaining the rides, entertaining the children, and keeping the park safe. Eddie is good at his job, and the park has kept a clean slate under his watch- until his 83rd birthday, when a loose car key causes a freak accident. In the last moment of his life, Eddie watches as a metal cart from a tower drop attraction plummets straight towards a little girl who he remembers as Amy or Annie. He desperately leaps to push her out of the way, and the last thing he remembers is two small hands on his own before everything disappears.

When Eddie wakes up, he's back in Ruby Pier, but in a different time: his childhood. All his aches and pains are gone. It feels like he has the body and energy of a young child. In this Ruby Pier of the past, Eddie meets the Blue Man who he remembers from when he was little. The Blue Man tells Eddie that he's arrived in heaven.

Eddie learns that there are five people he will meet here. Each was in his life for a reason, and each will teach him a meaningful lesson about his life on earth. Through Eddie's journey through heaven, he meets loved ones and people he doesn't remember, who will help him understand what happened in his life and show him how meaningful it really was.
