Holt Quick News - April 5th, 2020

Dear Holt Families,

These are trying times and everyone is struggling on some level. I hope that you and your family are doing as well as you can. I apologize for the length of this edition of the HQN. Please read the whole thing, however, as there is a lot of important information below (and some fun information too).

Thank you for your patience and understanding as the the 4J school district and Holt Elementary gear up for distance learning. We have a clear direction on where we are going and we are utilizing our collective efforts to create an effective vehicle to get us there. Oregon's Department of Education is directing school districts to embark upon "an historic transformation of our education system to maintain care, connection and continuity of learning for our students." That's a pretty broad direction, but it basically requires schools to "provide short-term supplemental learning...[and provide] substantive, graded, and credit bearing distance education for all students." Our teachers have labored mightily over the last week to adapt their expertise to the new circumstances in which we find ourselves. Eugene's school district is well equipped with technology and so we will be able to deliver instruction to our students online. Our school will be loaning devices to families that need them, as indicated on the 4J technology survey and through teachers' phone calls home last week. We anticipate that we will be doing a slow roll into distance learning as our teachers engage new learning tools to match the needs of our students. We will all be experiencing a learning curve for the first few weeks. I am asking families to please adjust home schedules to allow for a consistent level of school work each day. I realize that this may be daunting or even impossible for some families. Please just do your best. We'll do our best to work with you to fill any gaps.

Device Distribution

Device distribution to families who have let us know that they need a loaner device will take place during on Thursday and Friday. If your child's last name starts with A - M, your device will be ready to be picked up from 8 AM - 12 PM on either Thursday or Friday. If you child's last name starts with N - Z, your device will be ready to be picked up from 1 PM - 5 PM on either Thursday or Friday.

If you told your child's teacher last week that you need a loaner device or you indicated that you needed a device in the 4J Technology Survey, you will have a device waiting for you on Thursday or Friday during the times indicated in the table above. Since technology distribution cannot start for elementary schools until Thursday, some kids will not be able to access online assignments earlier in the week. Not to worry. If you are waiting for a loaner device from 4J, please know that this upcoming week of distance learning, and perhaps a little beyond, will consist of review only. Classrooms will not be moving ahead with new curriculum until April 16 at the earliest.

Supplementary Packets

For those who are waiting for devices and who wish to start reviewing on paper, we will have packets of district-printed material arriving on Monday. The packets contain review materials only. We hope that they will help kids who don't yet have electronic devices to shake off some of the rust from not being in school for the last few weeks. The packets are supplementary; they will not be needed by families who are accessing online learning. Review packets can be picked up where you pick up meals, alongside the west side of the school, adjacent to the cafeteria doors under the canopy. They will be available from 11:00 - 12:00 PM only, every day this week. English language version packets will be ready starting Monday. Spanish language version packets will be available starting no later than Wednesday.

A Message on Behalf of Our Instructional Staff

Please know that different grade levels are offering different remote learning experiences based on age and grade level expectations. Some teachers will be piloting Zoom video conferencing and some will be utilizing other learning options. While Seesaw will be the main learning platform, other resources and sites will vary from grade to grade and even teacher to teacher to an extent. Just as it's not effective for 1st grade students to use text books designed for 3rd grade students, teachers are approaching distance learning by employing technology that is best suited for learning at the different grade levels. All students will be learning through the Seesaw app, but not all students will be using other technologies (Zoom or Google Classroom) to the same extent, or even at all. Our IEP and 504 case managers are working closely with teachers to help design lessons with appropriate accommodations. We're moving as quickly as we can to meet the needs of all of our students.

Holt Staff Parade!

The first ever Holt Staff Car Parade is coming to a neighborhood near you. Get ready Holt families!!! Holt's staff has been missing our students and would love to see their smiling faces! Teachers and support staff are voluntarily forming a Holt staff car parade to drive through neighborhoods close to where most Holt families reside. On Wednesday, April 8th from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm, teachers and support staff will be parading through neighborhoods. For route details, please see the attached map. If your child would like to see his/her teacher and familiar support staff, please have him/her stand at your window, or at the end of your driveway, keeping proper social distance along the parade path. Staff will remain in their cars slowly driving by with a honk and a wave. Please know that this is strictly voluntary. Our staff wants your kids to know how much they are loved and they matter!

Estimadas familias

Estos son tiempos difíciles y todos están luchando en algún nivel. Espero que usted y su familia estén tan bien como puedan. Pido disculpas por la duración de esta edición de la HQN. Sin embargo, lea todo esto, ya que hay mucha información importante a continuación (y también información divertida).

Gracias por su paciencia y comprensión mientras el distrito escolar 4J y la Primaria Holt se preparan para el aprendizaje a distancia. Los paquetes son suplementarios; no serán necesarias para las familias que acceden al aprendizaje en línea. Los paquetes de revisión se pueden recoger donde recoge las comidas, junto al lado oeste de la escuela, junto a las puertas de la cafetería debajo del dosel. Estarán disponibles de 11:00 a 12:00 PM solamente, todos los días de esta semana. Los paquetes de la versión en inglés estarán listos a partir del lunes. Los paquetes de la versión en español estarán disponibles a partir del miércoles.

Un mensaje en nombre de nuestro personal docente

Tenga en cuenta que los diferentes niveles de grado ofrecen diferentes experiencias de aprendizaje remoto basadas en las expectativas de edad y nivel de grado. Algunos maestros pondrán a prueba las videoconferencias de Zoom y otros utilizarán otras opciones de aprendizaje. Si bien Seesaw será la principal plataforma de aprendizaje, otros recursos y sitios variarán de grado a grado e incluso de maestro a maestro hasta cierto punto. Así como no es efectivo para los estudiantes de 1er grado usar libros de texto diseñados para estudiantes de 3er grado, los maestros se están acercando al aprendizaje a distancia mediante el empleo de la tecnología más adecuada para aprender en los diferentes niveles de grado. Todos los estudiantes aprenderán a través de la aplicación Seesaw, pero no todos los estudiantes usarán otras tecnologías (Zoom o Google Classroom) en la misma medida, o incluso en absoluto. Nuestro IEP y los administradores de casos 504 están trabajando estrechamente con los maestros para ayudar a diseñar lecciones con adaptaciones apropiadas. Nos estamos moviendo lo más rápido posible para satisfacer las necesidades de todos nuestros estudiantes.

Desfile del personal de Holt!

El primer desfile de autos de Holt Staff llega a un vecindario cerca de usted. ¡Prepárate familias de Holt! ¡El personal de Holt ha extrañado a nuestros estudiantes y nos encantaría ver sus caras sonrientes! Los maestros y el personal de apoyo están formando voluntariamente un desfile de autos para el personal de Holt para conducir por vecindarios cerca de donde residen la mayoría de las familias de Holt. El miércoles 8 de abril de 2:30 p.m. a 3:30 p.m., los maestros y el personal de apoyo desfilarán por los vecindarios. Para obtener detalles de la ruta, consulte el mapa adjunto. Si a su hijo le gustaría ver a su maestro y al personal de apoyo familiar, haga que se pare en su ventana o al final de su camino de entrada, manteniendo la distancia social adecuada a lo largo del camino del desfile. El personal permanecerá en sus autos conduciendo lentamente con un bocinazo y una ola. Tenga en cuenta que esto es estrictamente voluntario. ¡Nuestro personal quiere que sus hijos sepan cuánto los quieren y son importantes!
