The work we're called to do as teachers of reading and writing matters. Not only are reading and writing foundational to literacy, they are at the core of the calls for equity and social justice happening throughout our colleges. Assignments in this course are meant to invite reflection, knowledge building, and planning for the critical action we'll take in our courses to invite students into equitable and inclusive composition courses.
Over the course of the semester, you may not be able to complete every assignment, and we don't expect you to. You are very busy! There are many and competing demands on your time. This course is offered Credit/No Credit, with 70% as passing. You should feel free to make decisions about assignments to focus on and assignments to let go. Don't hesitate to reach out if you need guidance in making these decisions, keeping your learning goals at the center. The most important assignments are those designated "Making it Real."
Course activities include professional reading, Independent writing in your course notebook, posting to online discussions, using Reading Apprenticeship Team Protocols with colleagues to give and receive feedback, and completing a final “Make it Real” project. The course is designed to be completed in approximately 50 hours—about five to seven hours per week.
Your facilitator will read and respond to all of your written contributions to the course, and the emphasis is on formative feedback, not evaluation.
If you've elected to take this course for continuing education units, this course is offered as a Credit/No Credit course. In order to receive credit for the course, the overall grades must be more than 70%.
