Thank you for registering for the 2023 Linguistic Justice Practice in Community College and Beyond Conference! We are hyped that you plan to join us!
We’d like to share some information about how the day will go - especially some important information about Zoom capacity and our YouTube livestream.
Zoom vs. YouTube
Please be aware that the capacity in the Zoom room is 300, as we want to make sure we’re as hands-on as possible. However, all sessions in the main conference room will be livestreamed on YouTube. Questions will be taken from the Zoom room Q&A and YouTube livestream comments.
Which should I attend?
If you plan to actively participate in the conference and want to attend a breakout room session that will not be livestreamed, we recommend you “arrive” when doors open at 8:55 am (or earlier) for the greatest chance of being among the first 300! Please note, you will have the opportunity for professional development verification of attendance whether you attend via Zoom or the YouTube livestream.
On the other hand, if you know you’ll be mostly listening while doing other things (which we fully support!), we recommend you plan on attending the livestream, or consider allowing the first wave of registrants to enter and try your luck after 9 am.
We know that some folks will be dropping off throughout the day, so another option is to start with the YouTube livestream and try the Zoom again later (or vice versa!).
Thank you for considering other participants, and however you attend, please know that we appreciate you and the LJ work you're doing with students.
To access Zoom (until capacity is reached), make sure you are registered on Eventbrite. Your registration confirmation email will include the Zoom registration link. We recommend that you register in advance to receive your unique link to access the session.
To access YouTube Livestream (9 am to 4:30 pm on April 28) for the main Zoom conference room only: https://youtube.com/live/JLRs5CS0CwY
Do I have to have my camera on or speak?
You do not have to have your camera on, and you do not have to speak! However, please know that this is not a Zoom “webinar.” We are together in Zoom, so we will see you if your camera is on, and we will see your still photo if your camera is off. While we anticipate that many conversations will take place in the chat (yes, it might be a bit chaotic, let’s be honest!), we also imagine there will be space for speaking at a minimum in the breakout rooms, if you so choose. We know the workshop presenters and facilitators will appreciate, and even invite, discussions and ideas from attendees!
Do you have any advice for attending a full-day virtual conference?
We do! We want to assure everyone that it’s okay to walk the dog, fold some laundry, eat, or lay on the floor and stare at the ceiling while you listen - to take care of yourself throughout the day. We know the speakers and discussions will be FIRE! We will all leave having learned a lot, having been inspired, and ready to implement or continue to grow in changing the work we do with students. And we also want you to take care of yourself. So absolutely show up, take notes, and share in the chat, feeling free to be present in other ways throughout the day, too!
Self-Selecting Breakout Rooms
For those attending on Zoom, workshops and lightning rounds will take place in breakout rooms that you will self-select. This means you can choose your Breakout Room without the host having to assign you one. You will need to be on Zoom 5.3.0 or later to self-select Breakout Rooms. (Note: For those attending on YouTube, you will be able to view all sessions in the main conference room).
