Mound Westonka High School:

Honoring Our Veterans

Our History

While many realize that Veterans Day, which always falls on November 11, is a day to honor our Veterans, few realize the historical significance behind the day. Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day and marked the end of hostilities of World War I that occurred at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month. Therefore, the day is always recognized on November 11th, regardless of the day of the week the 11th falls on.

In 1954, the word “Armistice” was replaced with “Veterans” as a way to formally include all Veterans of all American wars in the day of remembrance. Veterans Day is a day not only to remember those who died in service to our country, but also to recognize those who continue to serve today.

Mound Westonka High School wanted to provide an opportunity and space to showcase our school's Veterans. In the Fall of 2016 the project of the "Veteran's Day Wall of Honor" was formed. We knew that among our families there were many Veterans that have served or are currently serving in our Armed Forces.

The Wall provided students, families, and staff of MWHS an opportunity to tell their family member's story.

We have been witness to the powerful experience of watching students and staff stand beside each other learning about each other's family members and their sacrifices. It is a wonderful tribute and it puts a lot of meaning around the day for a school.

The wall has been on display in since 2016 in the halls of Mound Westonka High School.
