ela

HMH "Into Reading" is the reading curriculum used for reading in grades K-5.  The components of the reading program include: mini lesson, independent reading, small group strategy lesson, share, shared reading (K-2), read aloud, and guided reading. 

The components of the writing workshop include: mini lesson, independent writing, small group strategy lesson, and share. 

Fundations is used for phonics in grades K-2. Students in grades 3-5 will be using the phonics component included in HMH "Into Reading."

math

HMH Into Math is used by all grades at P.S.134. This curriculum provides students with a hands-on, problem solving approach to learning math. Differentiated tools and instruction allow learners of all levels to grasp the concepts taught in lessons. Skills are continuously revisited, developed and extended many times over the course of one year and into the upper grades.  Into Math provides for whole group instruction, partner work and individual activities.  Students are encouraged to explain and discuss their mathematical thinking in their own words.  Students and families are encouraged to use the digital component of the curriculum to further advance their understanding at home.

science

At P.S. 134 every classroom teacher is using a hands-on science program for science instruction in grades K-5.  The program helps students develop skills for a lifetime of learning.  In addition, grades 1-5 visit the Science Lab atleast once a week.  The science cluster teacher uses the Amplify science program, which provides children with many self-discovery opportunities.  The science room with equipped with tables, making it conducive for children to work in a group setting.  There is an abundance of library books and science materials , which assist in enriching science experiences.  The room is also equipped with a large counter, working sink, television, computer and Smart Board.  

social studies

Social Studies instruction follows the NYS curriculum.  Students are engaged in using nonfiction texts, trade books, maps, and other materials.  Students participate in individual and group activities and complete research projects.  Trips help to enhance the Social Studies curriculum. 

art

The Art program is provided to all students throughout the year.  The program allows the students to learn a variety of styles and techniques using artistic mediums and materials.  Students maybe taught by and Art teacher, enrichment teachers, classroom teachers and also through collaboration with art organizations.  Selected students may participate in Art Clubs.  

music

The PS 134 Music Program provides a lush variety of opportunities to create, perform, respond and connect. Students work on music skills by singing folk songs from around the world and playing various instruments such as the xylophone and tubano drum. In third grade students will receive musical training on the recorder and in 5th grade on the keyboard. In the music curriculum, students use music technology to expand literacy and composition skills. Students have the opportunity to join the P.S. 134 chorus in 4th and 5th grade as well as the P.S. 134 Ukulele Club. Both groups perform during our Holiday and Brotherhood Concerts.   

physical education

The physical education program offers are variety of activities to support students' overall health and physical growth.  Students participate in grade appropriate activities related to gross and fine motor skills, exercises, body movements and games using the Physical Best Program.  They engage in both individual and team activities.  Students participate in the Dance Festival and Dance Clubs.  All teachers are trained in the Move-to-Improve program.  

technology

The technology program is held weekly for each student in the P.S. 134 Computer Lab.  Students have the opportunity to work on desktops, laptops and iPads to gain exposure to a variety of devices.  Keyboarding, Internet Safety, Computer Science, and Research are the main topics the students are exposed to in a project-based learning environment.  These topics hold strong connections with the subject areas the students are learning about in their classrooms.
