Principal

Welcome

Safety is a priority at The Bay Academy. We will continue to follow the strict guidelines brought forth by the Chancellor and the New York City Department of Education.

The Bay Academy was one of the highest performing Middle Schools during remote learning. Academic structure, support and advancement was the priority of all planning and decision making throughout remote learning.

Students will receive a rigorous, challenging and robust education.

Summer Assignments were thoughtfully planned to strengthen skills by adding the online platforms such as Quindew and Freckle.

Parents will continue to be informed using our platforms such as Jupiter Ed, School Messenger, G-Suite and our website at www.IS.98.net.

Any information presented is proposed and subject to change according to the New York City Department of Education and the Office of the Mayor and the Governor.

Please visit the "School Year 2021-2022" link below for up to date information from the New York City Department of Education:

Our Tentative School Calendar

Please refer to our school calendar on www.is98.net for up to date information.

Safety Protocols and Procedures

Please click the arrow on the right to view this information.

  • School entry procedures will align with health and safety measures. Possible temperature checks will be taken during arrival. Parents are expected to take their child’s temperature each and everyday before school. If your child has a temperature, please do not send them to school.

  • Every student and staff member must complete the Health Screening Form prior to entering the school building each day. Anyone entering the building must confirm that they are not experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, have not recently tested positive for COVID-19, and are not currently required to quarantine based on close contact with an infected person. If you need a thermometer to check for a fever, you can request one from your school.

  • The Bay Academy will assign multiple points of entry and will identify them with signage to ensure that students are utilizing the same arrival and dismissal entry points every day. Upon arrival they will report directly to their assigned classroom. These classrooms will be the same everyday.

  • Each point of entry will be supervised by sufficient staff to ensure that students are supported in maintaining physical distancing and using PPE (Personnel Protective Equipment). School personnel will be outside of each entry point to ensure that students are lining up on the designated social distancing marking.

  • Students can pick up an “Grab and Go” breakfast at their arrival door and eat in their assigned classroom.

  • Students must arrive with their own face coverings, and if they do not have a face covering, one will be provided before entering the school building.

  • The Bay Academy will implement three feet markers and identified traffic patterns with directional markings throughout the building.

Student Circulation

  • To reduce movement throughout the building, teachers will travel from class to class, with students remaining in the same room throughout the day to the best extent possible. If students have to travel, proper social distancing protocols will be followed.

  • Where possible, students will remain with the same group of students, in their cohort, throughout the day.

  • Face coverings must be worn at all times except while eating or drinking.

  • Per State Department Of Health guidelines, appropriate signage, e.g., directional markers and physical distancing guidelines, will be displayed on walls and floors throughout all travel routes and staircases.

  • The Bay Academy will endeavor to maximize the use of outdoor space for multiple uses, including instruction where feasible and appropriate.

Cleaning

  • All classrooms and common areas, such as auditoriums and gyms will have hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes available. High-touch” areas such as doorknobs and water fountains will be cleaned multiple times throughout the day, and each classroom will be deep cleaned and disinfected daily using electrostatic technology.

Student Exit Procedures

  • The Bay Academy will assign and identify designated points of egress.

  • There will be staggered dismissal times and designated multiple exits for all students.

  • Families must be aware of exit procedures and are encouraged to arrive at designated exit/ times to avoid congestion.

Visitors to the Building

  • In an effort to limit the number of visitors in our school at any given time, The Bay Academy will address all visitor and parent concerns by phone or computer.

  • If a parent is called to the school to pick up their child, the child will be brought to the main lobby to meet the parent.

  • Non essential individuals will not be allowed to enter school buildings.

COVID-19 Testing

Every school will randomly test biweekly unvaccinated students, who have submitted consent for testing, at a threshold of ten percent of unvaccinated students per school population (Pre-K and Kindergarten are excluded). Please note that students must submit a new COVID-19 testing consent form for the 2021-2022 school year to participate in the testing program.

Please view the short video to the right to see the quick and easy testing process:

Consent

Submitting consent to have your child tested for COVID-19 in school is quick and easy. Please note-if you already submitted consent during the last school year or summer, you will need to do so again for the 2021-2022 school year.

There are two easy ways to submit:

  1. Fill out the form online using a New York City Schools Account (NYCSA)

  • If you already have a NYCSA account linked to your student(s): Log in, click your student’s name, click “Manage Account,” and then when a dropdown menu appears, click “Consent Forms.” Read the page, and then choose the consent option at the end for your student.

  • If you do not already have a NYCSA account: You can create one right away! If you have an account creation code from your school, you can create a full account in approximately five minutes, and then provide consent as described above. If you do not have an account creation code from your school, you can still provide your consent right away by clicking “Manage Consent” under “COVID-19 Testing” and filling out your and your child’s information to provide consent.

  1. Print and sign the form and bring it to your child’s school on the first day they are back in the school building. Click on the button below to access the form.

  • Borrowing a device is free!

  • Borrowed devices should be used for school purposes only and kept in a secure location.

  • Students will be provided with a device if needed by the Department of Education.

Meal Services

  • Grab-and-go meals will be available for breakfast and hot lunch will be available for all students each day.

  • Students will also be permitted to bring their own lunch if preferred.

  • Lunch will be in classrooms and the cafeteria to minimize interaction between groups of students and movement.

  • After eating, students will be expected to wipe down the area where they ate their meal.

  • Students must put their face masks back on as soon as they finish their meal.

  • Students on any given day that they are remotely learning can pick up a lunch from their identified school building near their home.

  • Information regarding PTA Activities can be found on the PTA tab on the school's website www.is98.net

Transportation

-DOE will provide school transportation, as required, to include all public school students, students with special needs and students in temporary housing situations.

-Because of this unique situation, it may not be possible to provide transportation through a conventional mode such as a bus, and may require other modes to be employed to satisfy transportation needs, such as MetroCard.

-Individuals must wear acceptable face coverings at all times on any DOE school transport vehicle (e.g., entering, exiting, and seated), and should maintain appropriate social distancing, unless they are members of the same household.

-Families will be notified prior to the start of school as to what the seat designators will look like so that they can instruct their children prior to boarding the bus.

-In recognizing the impact of this pandemic, the DOE is recommending that families, wherever possible, help reduce the number of students in need of busing by either transporting their children to school on their own, walking, or biking.

-The Bay Academy will allow students to lock up their bicycle in the schoolyard at their own risk. The Bay Academy does not provide a lock and is not responsible for monitoring the bicycle.

Regarding COVID-19 Masks

The face masks listed below ARE NOT RECOMMENDED by the CDC

Face Shields

  • A face shield is primarily used for eye protection for the person wearing it. At this time, it is not known what level of protection a face shield provides to people nearby from the spray of respiratory droplets from the wearer. There is currently not enough evidence to support the effectiveness of face shields for source control. Therefore, CDC does not currently recommend use of face shields as a substitute for masks.

Face Masks with Ventilators

The purpose of masks is to keep respiratory droplets from reaching others to aid with source control. However, masks with one-way valves or vents allow air to be exhaled through a hole in the material, which can result in expelled respiratory droplets that can reach others. This type of mask does not prevent the person wearing the mask from transmitting COVID-19 to others. Therefore, CDC does not recommend using masks for source control if they have an exhalation valve or vent.

For more information regarding Face Mask Coverings please visit the Center of Disease Control (CDC) website:
