Danijo Orphanage Center, Odienya, Kenya

You are warmly welcome.

Situated in the lush and fertile village of Odienya near Lake Victoria in West Kenya, we are a small, but growing, community self help group and orphanage, focusing on educating the less fortunate families in our area through organic farming and school projects. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers who can help us expand our progress. We offer you training in organic farming or early childhood education, and a unique experience of our rich culture and traditional customs. We have several acres of land dedicated to our project and focus on growing maize, kale, bananas, sweet potatoes, pineapples, papaya, mango, avocados and peanuts among others. We also farm livestock including cows, chicken, and rabbits.

Read the Project Report 2014 to see our recent progress.

Danijo Shiners Academy

A primary school project serving disadvantaged children of the region

In this small agricultural village in Southeast Kenya (Nyanza), George Ouma has ambitiously started a project of building a school. The current Kenyan system does not allow all children access to education, so George has created a basic primary school to welcome the unfortunate children of this part of the country where the AIDS epidemic has left many children orphaned. For the moment, a small provisory 3-room school house constructed of wood, mud, and an iron sheet roof is used for approximately 30 students between the ages of 4 and 8, several of whom are orphans. He has named the school Danijo Shiner’s Academy after his father, Daniel "Danijo" Ouma, whose dream was to create a school on his land where the impoverished children of the Nyanza region could truly shine. After his father’s passing in 2010, George nobly carried out his vision.

George is working toward creating a large school consisting of ten classrooms, a kitchen, dining room, office, dormitory, small clinic, and bathroom facilities. To complete this task it is important to him to also build a small house for the volunteers, who continue to be an integral part of this project.

To honor this vision, a call goes out to all people who are willing to help in any of the following ways:

Small contributions can make a big impact. Help with fund-raising, grant proposal writing, and donations can see our project through. The price for a school desk (table and bench for 3 students) is only about $7. Enough text books for the whole school would cost approximately $240.

Sending basic school supplies, new or used (pencils, chalk, school books, paper, clothing, shoes, etc.)

At the school or on the farm, lending a hand with construction, teaching, cooking, etc.
