Wellesley Weekly
25th June 2018
From the Headmaster's Study
Wellesley enjoyed a glorious weekend in the sunshine. We hope that you enjoyed the Speech Day and hearing from the pupils about what they have been up to this year. We certainly enjoyed sharing our first with you all.
The messages that permeated through from both Jeremy Cowdrey OW (in the Sports Hall on Saturday) and His Right Honourable Judge Jeremy Carey (in Chapel on Sunday) were reinforced yesterday in Headmaster’s Assembly. Aside from their brilliant messages, what struck me was their love and affection for our Wellesley House. As I said on Saturday – this is a special place.
Claire and I thank you for all of your support.

Leavers’ Service
A reminder to parents of leavers that Sunday's chapel service is a special Leavers' Service that will be addressed by Mrs Jane Ashton, the current High Sheriff of Kent. Jane is an ex-governor of the school, a parent of four Old Welleslians and a former Chaplain of Benenden School. The service begins at 10.15 am and all parents and families are welcome to attend. There will be coffee available after the service.

Junior House Sports Morning
The annual Junior House Sports Morning took place on Friday, during which all the children took part in the long jump, high jump, a 75 metre sprint, a 2 minute run and nerf throwing. William Franklin took the honours as JH and overall champion, with Gracie Lawton winning the JS prize. Lots of photos on Facebook, do have a look.
Speech Day and Sports Weekend
Congratulations to all the prize winners and thank you for all the support from parents. Speech and Sports Day went very well and was enjoyed by families and staff alike in glorious conditions. We would particularly like to thank the guest speaker, Old Welleslian Jeremy Cowdrey, who spoke entertainingly about kindness and the effect of one’s decisions on others, with the help of a group drawn from the audience, including Head Girl Nandita Gurung and the school’s youngest member, Lottie Southorn. On the athletics field, particular mention should be made of Toni Alaka, who broke two school records in the Middle age group.
On Sunday the traditional parents' matches took place. The mothers won very narrowly in the rounders match, while the boys prevailed over their fathers and other family members in a high-scoring contest.
The art work on display over the weekend demonstrated the ability and imagination that the children possess, and the weekend came to a close with the evening chapel service. The choir demonstrated again how talented they are with their beautiful singing, and we thank His Honour Judge Jeremy Carey, an ex-Wellesley parent, for his address in which he talked about knowing the difference between right and wrong and the Rule of Law.
Leavers’ Activity Programme
The programme of activities for the leavers is now in full swing. On Monday they had an Art Workshop and also played Pickleball. Tuesday saw them having an energetic day, with Bubble Football in the morning and Archery Tag in the afternoon. Thursday morning they enjoyed Djembe Drumming, although the windy conditions meant that Falconry Experience planned for the afternoon was postponed until Friday this week. On Friday morning they had a Mandarin lesson, courtesy of two teachers from King’s, Canterbury, and in the afternoon they went to the Palace Cinema in Broadstairs for a private showing of ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’.
Golf
Well done to the golfers who took part in the Kent Prep Schools Golf Championship at Hythe on Tuesday, and especially to the pairing of Freddy Fisher and Freddie Evans who finished as winners. Also playing in the competition were Gabriel Barlow and William Evans.
Form Assembly
Forms JS and JH gave their form assembly on Tuesday. They spoke about co-operation and putting others before oneself, through a short play and then with examples of people from history, including Florence Nightingale, Marie Curie, Mother Teresa, Malala Yousafzai, Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela.
Athletics
Well done to the team of athletes who went to Tonbridge School on Tuesday to take part in the Prep Schools Tonbridge Trophy. In a very competitive field, they finished 3rd out of eleven schools, putting in some fine individual performances.
Maths Competition
Reuben Okotie, Robin Hu, April Ma and Tom Leonard accompanied Miss Stevens to Christchurch Junior School in Ramsgate on Thursday to take part in a Team Challenge. After an enjoyable morning of mind-bending puzzles they finished in 7th place out of the fifteen teams competing.

We were treated to two musical performances in this week's assembly. Oscar Vaughan and Tom Leonard each presented a trumpet piece that they are also playing in music examinations on Monday. Oscar played ‘One Hand, One Heart’ from ‘West Side Story’, while Tom gave a performance of ‘Anvil Chorus’ from ‘Il Trovatore’. Well done, Oscar and Tom.
Team of the Week
Well done to the 1st XI cricket team, who had an excellent week, not only having a comfortable win in their match on Wednesday, but following that on Thursday with victory in the Dulwich U13 Competition, winning all four of their matches. They then went on to beat the fathers in a nail biting finish on Sunday evening! They will be rewarded with cookies and squash in the Headmaster’s drawing room during a morning break.
Music Exams
Five children travel to Canterbury on Monday to take ABRSM music exams. We wish them success in these exams.

Good luck to the boys’ tennis team, who have qualified for the Under 13 Boys Division 2 Kent Play-Offs. They will be competing against several other teams on Tuesday.
Set Shout
Rehearsals take place on Tuesday morning in preparation for the 'Set Shout', which follows in the afternoon. Please note that this will be an in-house event without spectators. The winning set will be heard singing their song at the summer concert.
Leavers’ Activity Programme
The activities for the leavers continue on Monday with an outing to SOAR Trampoline Park in Gillingham for dodgeball in the morning and then a walk from Ramsgate to Broadstairs in the afternoon. The Art Scholars group will be travelling to London on Thursday to visit the Picasso exhibition at the Tate Modern, while the 1st XI cricket team will be playing a match against Trinity House School from South Africa. On Friday morning they will carrying out the ‘Big Beach Clean’, while the afternoon will be taken up with the Falconry Experience postponed from last week.
Block 3 Camping
All the Block 3 children depart on Thursday morning for the annual camping trip and we particularly thank Joe Dawson’s parents who are hosting the campers. The group are away until Saturday, accompanied by Mr Kearns, Miss Wallace and Mr Longdon, and fingers are firmly crossed for good weather!
