My research at the intersection of sustainability science, civil and environmental engineering, and environmental policy, focuses on: 1) theories and practices of urban resilience; 2) infrastructure planning and system dynamic analysis; and 3) climate change adaptation.

My research goals are to leverage my work across the world to change the way cities and communities adapt to future climate and extreme weather events. To manage the growing complexity of urban systems worldwide and future climate extremes, cities need to better understand urban resilience. To achieve this goal, I use diverse methods from quantitative and qualitative data analyses to stakeholder engagement. I link hydrologic models, infrastructure vulnerability analysis, decision support tools, and participatory workshops to improve infrastructure design and development strategies for systems-level urban water and energy system management. Furthermore, I study how governance in diverse socio-cultural and biophysical contexts addresses climate extremes, the dynamics of social-ecological-technological systems (SETS) tackling climate risks in cities, and knowledge co-production approaches for institutional climate adaptation planning and community-based capacity building for urban water and energy resilience to extreme weather events.
